I have heard rumors of shims being "spit" when on top? I would think you would have to have 1/4" clearance for that to happen ? Likely deserve it if you let things get that sloppy.

I suppose if a bike were highly over-revved in a racing situation a shim 'might' be sent flying and I have heard of it happening. But the revs must be astronomical. Just seems overkill for shim under bucket with engines that have rev limits of 8 or 10 thousand rpm. My little V-Strom 650 is red lined at 10,500, the Burgman at 8,500 and the ST -1100 at 8, and all have Shim under bucket. Not looking forward to the cost of having valves adjusted on any of them. At least they can be checked without the cams coming out first and if all is well, button 'em up for another many kms.

Overhead cam clearances actually grow smaller over time. The only way to have too much clearance is to start with too much.
Today I decided to clean the top of the engine around the crank breather, where dust and dirt had accumulated over time. Normally this would be a 15 minute job at most, but I decided to take off the starter cover to clean around the edge. Then I thought "What the hell...might as well take the crank breather off and do a thorough job." But there was some dirt left along the crack between the clutch cover and the engine, so I decided to take it off and see what the front sprocket looked like. I don't think that area had been cleaned since the bike was new in 1981, so I had to spend some time to clean it up before I could even see the sprocket. After I took it off I thought..."Well...inf or a dime...in for a dollar." I pulled off the guard that protects the alternator wiring and went right at it. Two cans of carb cleaner later I was done, except fot the bolt that I twisted off when I removed the guard. It's drilled now but I have no easyouts so it will stay like that for another day or two. But the engine and cases are now really clean!
Oh! The sprocket? It's worn out. I ordered a new chain and sprockets from Z1E but they're on the move right now so I won't see the parts for a few weeks.

I decided to mount a windshield that I had from my Versys and put it on the 900 do to the fact that when I take it on a ride and put 400km+ my neck and upper body cant seam to take it any more.
I know people will say ride the Versys for those long trips but its just not as much fun doing day trips like the Z1 has been .

Big difference and no turbulence at all. I will be taking it to Nakusp this weekend and see how it handles trying to keep up with Jetta90 and Glenn

Not as much a motorcycle as a new home for motorcycles.
After months of delay due to bureaucracy the new shop/garage with attached living quarters is underway.
Unbelievable weather has been a real boon (so far).

Only the crawl space will be ICF. Conventional frame for everything else. The shop/garage will be 1000 sq ft. It will have a polyaspartic floor again, 3 glass garage rollup doors and a vent system with heat.
Long way to go yet
