Best guess, Piaggio was having a bunch of stuff made for them in China.

We all know how China feels about intellectual property.

Same thing Lifan did with Honda.

I try to avoid buying anything made in China but sometimes it's not possible to find alternatives.  Today I bought two cans of smoked oysters.  When I got home I checked the label...from China.

Ouch!

Probably marginally better than the Chinese copy of a Russian copy of a pre-war German motorcycle that they normally sell  Tongue

The Chiang Jiang motorcycle factory made over one million of the russian German knock-off sidecar outfits for the chinese army
Passing through Beijing once I visited an American who was buying up Chang Jiang and swaping in used BMW motor/gearboxes
He said the original motors had no lube pump, just splash lubrication.
on another trip I booked a tour with Beijing Sideways, they picked me up in a BMW powered sidecar and took me out to the great wall, an all day trip.
