Manufacturers often build a "halo product" that loses money but enhances the brand overall.
Toyota lost money on every 1995/6 Supra they sold but those cars are still legendary.
Honda seems to like building an "F-you" product every now and then. CX turbos, VTX1800, Rune, etc.
I've ridden a Rune, it's surprising how well it handles and it pulls hard. I liked it and I think it's pretty cool. Not sure I could own one though.
Bob Girvin designed a parallelogram fork for mountain bikes, I had one for a while. They work amazing until you get too much slop in the bushings, then something happens that Girvin called "The shopping cart effect". Yes, you can get a tank slapper on a bicycle too.

Ryan @ Fortnine is definitely entertaining.
And any bike test he does offers zero amount of guarantee of positive overall ranking. Hence the reason he doesn’t get many new bike test offerings.
