Awesome bikes. Tough as nails. I have a “ from new” 1986 GSXR1100. I actually found it fairly comfy. Riding one in traffic on a hot day is a bit of a bitch with lots of radiant heat. A great motor even by today’s standards. Handles great on tight, bumpy and sometimes dirty back roads. On a “good air day” it will easily lift the front wheel in second.  I bought it to replace a VF1000 Honda which was top heavy and handled like crap thx to the 16 inch front . Riding the Honda fast was like “dancing with a fat girl in high heels” .  It could be done but you had to pay attention. The Suzuki was a big upgrade. If you get a chance to buy a good one do it!

You still have the bike? Blue/wht or Red. ?

Picked up 3 litres of reg vinegar. Will try that first. Many people have opinions on POR15 or Kreem?

Not sure if regular vinegar works as well as the apple cider vinegar.  I've heard it doesn't but don't for sure.  The apple cider vinegar works.

Cleaning vinegar would work better than normal stuff intended for chips.

Both regular and apple cider vinegar are composed of acetic acid, but apple cider vinegar also contains citric acid.  My guess is that it doesn't matter which one you choose to de-rust a tank but that's just a guess.  I've never used either, preferring to go with Metal Rescue.

I started on the GSXR1100. Built a bracket for the motor so it will be easier to clean/detail/valve adjust etc and am close to getting the chassis stripped.

i use caswell tank sealer $50 does two tanks. you don't need to clean the tank spotless this stuff covers over the leftover rust. used it on many tanks and all are doing great. just make sure you roll it around good and coat the whole inside.

Does that right side frame member actually unbolt to enable the engine removal?

It has 3 connection points so I don't think much rigidity is lost either.

That usually happens.....the engineer has the best idea, but the designers and accountants make changes.

I have done about 5-6 tanks in the last 10 years, used both Caswells and POR15 Kit.

Caswells is very thick and good if you have pin holes to seal, if no holes use POR15.

POR15 is awesome, the motorcycle kit is available from Lordco,

To prevent the flash rusting that occurs after the final etching/cleaning rinse, use a liter or two of isopropyl alcohol, dump it in and then rinse and dry, it removes the water and aids in drying.

My last tank I did on the 1981 GS650E I used the isopropyl alcohol and it was perfect inside, it almost looked factory.
