September 7, 1963,  Henri Mancini released his album “The Pink Panther”. This album alone garnered 3 Grammy’s, within his multiple awards over 40 years.

Here he is with his orchestra, on the Lawrence Welk Show, from 1981.

This guy retired recently.  He had a long career in music, mainly as a singer and performer.  This song is one from the early 70's.

This song was rambling around in my brain most of yesterday.  I remember it from the early 60's, part of the pre-beatles mish mash of Italian singers like Dean Martin.  But unlike Dean, this guy could SING!

September 9, 1972, Jim Croce's Album " You Don't Mess Around with Jim", went to #1 on the top 200 Album Chart. Within this album, " Time in a Bottle", hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, and lasted on the top 10, a full 30 months after he was killed in a plane crash.

This band created an entirely new sound for the world.  It was sock hop music that every garage band tried to copy back in the 60's.  It sparked a rivalry with the best band of the eara that forced both groups to get better with every new album.  This song was an early one for this group.

The Beatles responded to the challenge of doing better than the Beach Boys 64 album with a complete switch of styles with Rubber Soul.  It was the turning point for music that lasted for several decades, and included songs like Drive My Car, If I Needed Someone and this beautiful song by John, a story about a one night stand.

The Beach Boys responded to the challenge in early 1966 with Pet Sounds, probably technically their best work to date, but not as successful as Rubber Soul, nor Revolver, which was the Beatles album that closely followed Pet sounds.  The biggest problem for the Beach Boys was their one and only songwriter, Brian Wilson.  The Beatles had three quality song writers so they always had plenty of good material for an album.  The Beach Boys couldn't keep up.  But Pet Sounds was definitely on a par with Rubber Soul.

One of the songs on Pet sounds was this one.

Jeff Lynne was in ELO.  He became good friends with George Harrison and produced several of George's records.  They were the initiators of The Travelling Wilburys.

The Beatles responded to Pet Sounds by releasing Revolver.  The Beatles were experimenters and Revolver had new sounds like taping guitar and reversing the tape.  The song I like most is Rain, where the drumming was outstanding.  But adding insult to injury the Beatles came out with Sgt Peppers in 1967.  This was perhaps their best to date studio songs, and was based on a theme of a band called Sgt Peppers.  Pretty much all of the songs on this album are classics.  This is one that I like.  It combines two songs in one and involves a full orchestra at several points.

Here is another John song from Sgt Peppers.  The common thought was that it was about LSD, but John claimed it was inspired by his son's reading of Alice in Wonderland.
