I was thinking back to the early 1980's yesterday.  At university I used to play bridge with a partner named Ruth at the old Memorial Union Building at the University of Saskatchewan.  She had the biggest set of knockers I've ever seen.  She introduced me to this band, who were making their way up the charts.  This song came a little later but was one of their better ones I think.

  Tony Bennett, RIP, July 21/2023.    This one surprisingly hurts, even though his music is not what I listened to in my impressionable teenage years. But it is a departure of an icon in the entertainment industry, that unlike the current festering vermin that are spewing their horrific noise pollution in 2023, this dude offered entertainment for sheer entertainment, without pushing a political or ideological narrative telling us what to do through their product. This guy offered lovely music that calmed the soul.

 Here he is live on the Ed Sullivan Show, September 1964, singing perhaps his trademark track, as only he could perform it. “  I left my heart in San Francisco” .

It's hard to listen to music made today.  It falls into two groups...hip hop, which I don't see as singing.  The second group is singers who try to add some sadness to their voice instead of actually singing the song.  To me a great song has a great melody and great lyrics, but most importantly I have to hear emotion in the singer's voice.    You hear all three parts in Tony's music.  Thankfully we have many recordings of him to remember when music was important to our lives.


This guy was pretty good on the harmonica, just as he was pretty good at pretty much everything in music.

On this date in 1978, EARTH, WIND & FIRE's cover of GOT TO GET YOU INTO MY LIFE by THE BEATLES entered the Billboard Hot 100 at #80 (July 22, 1978)
NOTE: In lieu of an 'official' video for the song I've put together my own edit using footage from the 1978 film 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band', the musical comedy film starring an ensemble cast led by Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees.  Beatles producer George Martin was in charge of the music, and the soundtrack was a success, but the movie was a huge flop.
This beatific love song is actually about marijuana. Paul McCartney cleared this up in his 1998 book Many Years From Now when he explained that it was not about a particular person, but his desire to smoke pot. "I'd been a rather straight working-class lad but when we started to get into pot it seemed to me to be quite uplifting," he said.
EW&F's cover reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart and No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also rose to No. 33 on the UK Singles chart.
The New York Daily News described Earth, Wind & Fire's version as "oh-so-cool". Allmusic noted the tune as "a great remake". Cashbox also called EWF's cover of the song an "innovative rendition".
There are no obvious drug references in the song, so it appears to be about a guy who is blissfully in love:
"Ooh, then I suddenly see you
Ooh, did I tell you I need you
Every single day of my life"
A British rock group called Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers released this song as a single around the same time it appeared on The Beatles Revolver album.
Bennett & The Rebel Rousers were an opening act for The Beatles on their European tour in early 1966; since there were no plans to release "Got To Get You Into My Life" as a single, Paul McCartney encouraged them to record it and produced the session.
Revolver appeared on August 5, 1966 and the Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers version of this song showed up on the UK chart for the first time on August 17, rising to #6 on September 21. It ended up being the biggest hit for the group, which made #9 in 1964 with "One Way Love."
Session musicians played trumpets and sax. It was the first time horns were used in a Beatles song.
The first group to chart with this song was Blood, Sweat & Tears, whose horn-heavy version made #62 in the summer of 1975. The Beatles version wasn't issued as a single until 1976, when Capitol Records issued it in America backed with "Helter Skelter."
This version went to #7 in July that year, becoming the first Beatles song to chart in the US since 1970. Later in 1976, Capitol issued "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," which made #49.
John Lennon thought this was some of McCartney's best work.

On this date in 1977, PETER FRAMPTON had the best selling single in America with I'M IN YOU (July 23, 1977). Both the song and the album of the same name would go on to reach Platinum status.

The song peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Cash Box Top 100 and in Canada, becoming his most successful single. The song was kept from reaching the top spot on Billboard by Andy Gibb's "I Just Want to Be Your Everything".

This was the title track from Frampton's 1977 I'm In You album, his fifth studio album and the one where he had a lot of pressure from producers to match the sales success of Frampton and Frampton Comes Alive!. This song is the highest Frampton ever climbed on the charts.

The follow-up album saw Frampton writing songs that displayed distinct R&B leanings, but despite the title song becoming another hit and the album going platinum, it was perceived as a disappointment compared to the monumental success of the live album. Although it was inevitable that many of his fans would perceive this as too dramatic a departure in style, the new songs on this album were chock full of catchy hooks, memorable choruses, spicy horns, and plenty of his trademark guitar stylings. "I'm In You" contained some of the most engaging material Frampton had ever written and more clearly displayed his talents as an arranger, and to promote the new album, Frampton again hit the road.

The title track and single “I’m in You” was written by Peter Frampton after returning to New York City from touring to record his live album Frampton Comes Alive! in 1976.

The song is about Frampton being recently separated from his first wife, the model Mary Lovett.

The song was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. Frampton demanded that bodyguards keep overzealous fans from disturbing his recording sessions.

This title song is mostly a keyboard driven number, featuring background vocals from Mick Jagger, with the sound of a Baldwin Piano, Moog synthesizer, ARP String Synthesizer, Gibson Les Paul, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion and vocals.

"I'm In You" is the song which Frank Zappa is parodying with "I Have Been in You" on his 1979 album Sheik Yerbouti. That album had a particularly racy theme throughout - it also included "Bobby Brown Goes Down" and "Jewish Princess," definitely two of Zappa's most ribald works.

  Mathews Southern Comfort.
  July 24th, 1970, this band released the single “Woodstock”.
 A month earlier, they taped this live performance at BBC Studios, London. Originally written by Joni Mitchell.
  It reached #11 on the billboard 100.
