In the summer of 1980 or 81 I was working at a mine in Pickle Lake,  about 200 miles north of Ignace in NW Ontario.  This song was verry popular.

I started my mining career as a shoveller, with INCO in Thompson, Manitoba, back in 1969.  I had just been laid off from a wholesale grocery warehouse when INCO's travelling HR team came through Saskatoon.  Back then they were constantly hiring to replace people who couldn't handle the North.  There were 26 of us signed up on the same day.  It was a Saturday, so that gives you some idea of how desperate they were for people.  There was very little to do in Thompson back then.  Single men either went to the bar of the pool hall.  I didn't drink so that left only one option.  Every time I went to plan some pool I heard this song on the radio.  Still one of my favourites.

As a young boy I lived in a small mining town in Quebec and took a bus 25 miles to go to school.  I was only 6 or 7, and one of the youngest people on the bus.  There was an older boy who sat in the back and sang the popular songs of the day.  This is one that I remember him singing.

We're in the middle of a warm and windy period here in Chase.  It brings back to mind this song by Billy Stewart.  It starts slowly and just gets better and better as the song progresses.  He does things with his voice that no one else can do.

It was the summer of 78 and I was getting ready to go back to university after an eight year sabbatical.  I had my motorcycle and a few thousand bucks in the bank so I thought I'd quite my job in Uranium City and spend the summer cruising.  This song had actually come out a bit earlier but it was still popular with the people I ran with.  It sort of typified the 70's rock music...raw and energetic.  I still play it now and then.

I'm a big fan of TDN.  I think they are still together although several original members have passed on.  One of Corey's guitars was donated to a casino in Deadwood.  I have a photo of it somewhere.

During my summer of fun this group was also very popular, with a clutch of hits behind them.  I used to sing this song as I travelled through the rain and fog that is often present around Lake Superior, even on sunny days inland.
