I never liked this band or this song when it first came out.  But I've changed my thinking on it.  It's a great song from a survivor.

I think the whole world got wrapped up in Beatlemania, couldn't escape it. The whole British invasion was remarkable, because it was different, and gave us youngsters a new style of music. I was never a big fan of early Beatles stuff, you know, " I want to hold your hand" or "She loves you yeah, yeah" kind of thing. Appealed to the girls, and that's what drove their early fan base. For me it was the Stones, or Animals, Kinks, etc. From "Sergeant pepper" onward their music got much better, and I think that was more John and George stepping up and being heard. For me, most of the classic Beatle songs are written by John or George. On my phone I have 6 songs by each of them, and only 1 by Paul, "Admiral Halsey", an interesting song. 40 years ago, RIP John Lennon.

Great comments Jodea!  What I enjoy most about the Beatles is that their stuff is still fresh when I play it today.  I like the Rolling Stones just as much, but their music is/was different.  They were and still are a stage band who don't bother too much with special effects.  The Beatles after 1966 became a studio band.  Much of their stuff couldn't be played live because of all the special effects, like playing guitar backwards in Rain.

I agree that George wrote some of the best Beatles songs, particularly in the second part of their popularity as you've described.  (He also wrote some great ones on earlier albums, like Taxman.). I would rate "While my guitar gently weeps" and "Here comes the sun" as among the best they ever did as a group.  John had some really great songs, like All you need is love during the same period, but he also produced an equal number of early tunes as.  One needs only listen to who's singing lead to know who the primary writer was.  But I also like many of Paul's songs.  Yesterday was his, as was Blackbird, Hey Jude and Get Back....one of my favourite Beatle tunes.

After they broke up they all put out their own albums, and many of their songs were excellent, particularly George's.  It's interesting to me to speculate on if they had stayed together and put their tunes on two or three more albums.  Imagine how good those albums would have been!

Agreed, their music still sounds relevant today, 50 years later. "Get back" and "Yesterday" are 2 of Paul's best for sure. I have 3 of Ringo's songs as well, even though I'm not sure who wrote them. My wife and I have done the Liverpool thing, spent a week there going around to all the tourist attractions, any thing Beatles. Interesting city for sure. A few years back we went to a talk put on by Pete Best, the original drummer. He was there from the beginning, and put up old photos, on a screen, of the lads. And that is what they were at that time, teenagers. He talked about how it was his Mum that really got them together. Being too young to play clubs or anyplace that served alcohol, she set up a coffee club in the basement of the family home. People would come in and play music, or what ever. Pete suggested to his mum that he had a couple of friends who would like to come over and play in the coffee club. And they did, with John joining in soon after. They had no one to play drums, so young Peter decides that he will learn. Buys a used kit and practices day and night, until he feels he can join in too. Soon their is 5 of them, with Johns friend Stu Sutcliffe on rhythm guitar, playing weekends at the house. Around this time they happened to go to their favorite record store, and talked to the owner, who had connections with some London people, invited him to the house to listen to them. I guess he was impressed, he became their manager. They were booked to work clubs in Germany, which was tough, hard work, in rinky dink places. It was at one of these clubs during a rehearsal that Stu Sutcliffe died from a brain aneurism. John was devastated, and it effected him for years after. By now they were older and could play clubs, like the famous Cavern club. Now this place is small, if you have been there, you wonder how anyone could perform on that stage. Now they are starting to record in studio. And this is where things go wrong for Pete Best. He is pulled aside and told he is no longer needed. To this day he has no idea as to why, or who wanted him gone. So on the early recordings they used session drummers, even Pete some times, to sit in. Months later Richard Starkey is bought in by George Martin. He is your new drummer. But he was terrible according to Pete, so he was still used as a stand in until Ringo got up to speed. A couple of hours listening to him talk about the early days of the Beatles, or the Quarrymen as they were known then, seeing the old photos, was an interesting take on a period we never hear about. Sorry to ramble on, but once I start, can't stop.

This band was one of the biggest of the early 70s. Very popular and had a different sound. I thought that they were great, had a couple of their albums. Along with the Moody Blues, not deemed to be R&R hall of fame material. A shame really. This is my favourite track.

Jethro Tull was an innovative group.  Ian Anderson was a terrific flutist.  He had an interesting stage presence.

This Canadian group was popular in the '90's, then broke up and recently have ref-formed.  The song was a big hit for them, one of several.
