Much agreed on Ry Cooder being outstanding....saw him a couple of times in Vancouver.

Saw Taj Mahal in the Trail Arena in the winter of 1971.....freezing cold in the arena (pre heaters for the hockey fans), and Taj Mahal had a bad cold, but he soldiered on, did simple songs with no loud or higher register parts.....memorable.

I have seen Ry a few times and always fantastic. Taj Mahal was a really good show “ Got de blues so bad one time, put my face in a permanent frown....” like that line and can be caught singing this out at the top of my lungs. Met him briefly after a show in Vancouver such a fine man.

From one of the best ever guitar players to one of the best ever trumpet players.  He had a voice like he was singing with a squirrel running up and down his throat.  But could he ever play!  I remember him as a regular on the Ed Sullivan show.  Always smiling and always full of music!  Better known for Hello Dolly or What a Wonderful World, but I like this one.

This guy was a very good jazzy folk singer back in the day.  Also an extremely good guitar player and composer.

This song is about motorcycles.

Another group from the '60's with great harmonies.  The phrase "It ain't over til the fat lady sings" seems appropriate, as she had an amazingly clear tone.  Their songwriter was capable of amazing lines, although ultimately his lines became white powder on a table.

There are many hits to choose from, but this one is my favourite.

This song is probably classified as a country song, or maybe a folk song.  It's by someone who wasn't well known, at least not here in BC.  He was a Newfoundlander, a poet and a great song composer and singer.  This is perhaps his best known song, and of course it's about the sea, but not from the perspective of a sailor.  It's from the perspective of his family..his wife and child.  For me it exudes great empathy for a lonely woman whose husband is away fishing, and whose only son wants to follow in his Dad's footsteps.  Unfortunately Ron Hynes died several years ago of cancer.

Back to the blues....although this guy probably wasn't considered a blues singer.

I've always been a fan of Glenn Miller.  Here is one of his greatest songs.

Running on MT today.  This one is from the late 1960's.  I don't have it on my phone....a bit too long for me.

Good one, one of my all time favourites. Never seen the video before, and it is too long in the LP format, but that didn't deter me from cranking it up when mom wasn't around. I have the 3 minute version on my phone, good enough for me these days.

I remember listening to the album back in high school.  Did not know there was a short version.  Will have to look for it in Itunes.

Speaking of running on MT...Jackson Browne is a great song writer.

And a bonus song today....

This is a Beatles song from their early days but it's done by James Taylor.  There was a relationship between Taylor and the Beatles over the years...not sure why.  Taylor covered a lot of their songs but I think this is one of the best covers of this song.  Great back beat.
