I always thought this song was written about Sonny Bono.  I was wrong.  It was written by Robert Hebb to commemorate his brother who was stabbed to death.  This cover is by one of the sweetest sounding voices ever.

Mining towns are heavily into country music.  In 1974 I started a job in the town of Manitouwadge, in NW Ontario.  This song was on the radio every morning for months as we went to work.

The local watering hole in Manitouwadge was the hotel.  In 1971 the bar was divided into two parts.  One part was for single men and the other was for couples.  The rules said bars had to close over supper hour, but that just meant you wouldn't be served.  You could however stay and finish your beer....all six of them ordered about 5 minutes before supper hour.  There was a juke box with most of the popular tunes of the day, again, mostly country singers.  This was one of the more popular ones.

Another country singer that occupied the background noise on a typical Saturday night was this guy.  He was an old time country singer who married another old time country singer.  This is one of their most popular duets.
