Howard,
You can always put regular plate on. For an old guy the insurance would be dirt cheap and then it is prorated if the V plate comes before expiration of the regular.
Come on you know you wanna.

I'm thinking of that, Barry......gotta drop the pics, app., and cheque at BCAA for transport later today, anyway. Still have a bit of fine tuning to do, in between daily tasks, before I terrorize the neighbourhood, again, prior to plating.

OK, actually took the Triumph up and down the street a couple of times. Goes well, great sound, shifts OK (considering I'm shifting left brain on this), dog hates it (barking each time I rode past), brakes need attention (foot dragging just about as efficient right now), getting the hang of not flooding on a cold start.
Vibrates less than anticipated, kinda like the XS400 or the XL250. For a physically small bike, it still feels big enough.....I'm gonna enjoy this bike.
At least I know the engine runs well.....now to smerph the usual things I do when I get a new bike......brakes, chain, forks, tires, rubber bits. Mostly winter work.

Had a charging issue with the LedZed. At 4K rpm, it was only putting out 12.4 volts. Changed the stator this morning, 15 volts.

The stator actually puts out about 45 volts AC measured phase to phase. It's 3 phase, hence 3 wires. You can check it with an AC voltmeter with leads touching any two of the three yellow wires. Then do the other two sets of two wires. If you're getting less than about 45 volts on any of the three phases you have a bad stator. The AC voltage is rectified to produce DC at about 15 to 20 volts. Here is a good video on Youtube explaining the entire electrical circuit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFzYYSHz9-M
There are other videos for engine disassembly and other aspects of the Z1.
Today didn't go very well for me. Sweetums and I left early for a ride up to Darcy with me on the KZ1000. We got to Alice Lake turnoff and I lost all power. Checked the fuses and they were all OK. No tools, so Sweetums went back and got the truck and we loaded the bike up and brought it home. Then I headed down to ICBC and got 3 months worth of insurance on the Z1 and we went out for a ride to Horshoe Bay and back. Tomorrow I have to tackle the loss of power issue. Most likely it's a separated wire somewhere. But I plan to replace the old fuse system with new knife blade fuses. I think I'll also take off the carbs and change the pilot jets, as the bike hesitates when applying throttle from a stop.
The day started off badly but ended not so bad for a birthday.

The old stator put out AC 54, 40, & 24 volts on each of the three phases. At idle it was DC 11.5 & 12 .8 at 4000 rpm. Resistance between the three pairs was good though.
The old stator didn't put out enough juice to run high beam. Low beam, it was just enough, but if I ran the high beam I had to use the kick starter afterwards.
Should be all good now.

Well done Ross! Looks like there were shorts in several of the stator coils. Today I'll figure out what my problem was, but frankly I'm not too upset about what happened. I hadn't run the Z1 since VIV last year and had forgotten what a nice machine it is to ride. (Other than that seat!)

Well, after putting around most of the summer on the TR5T with the OEM front 6" brakes, I acquired a different front wheel and brake setup (thanks, Scotty). After cleaning it up and replacing bits that needed doing, plus new cable and shoes, onto the bike it went.........wow, what a difference on a light bike...don't even think about planning ahead to stop at a particular point, just grab'em and put a foot down when the rolling stops.

Wally completed replacing the timing pin on the end of my crankshaft so I drove over to Langley to pick it up. Spent the rest of the afternoon putting the engine cases back together. That job is done. Oil pump and pan left before turning the engine over and re-install in the bike.
