yes its the 74 im building, when i got the cylinders back from Wally i forgot to vaporblast them and didnt notice until they were on, so i sealed it all up and stuck it in the machine to do just the cylinders
now i cant find tyres, guess  you got the last set

I picked up the tires on ebay from retro-cycle I think.  Want to trade for that broken down old Z1 you've got??

Order the carb damn it!!!Your wasting waaaaay to much time hugging,polishing,staring slobbering and God knows what else to that Triumph you've got.Order the carb and ride it!!This may mean turning away from requests from your multitude of friends,and family(Sorry Hawkeye}to spend time with them.Your not getting any younger by the looks of you either.Git er done....

I think I paid around $300 for each tire with shipping.

I have two sets of original Z1B bodywork that need repainting.  Does anyone around here do good a good job on Z1 paint.  I want one in Super Candy Blue and one in Super Candy Red.

I put air in the tires of my new ST1100 today, what a difference going from 20 up front and 24 in the back to the proper 36 and 40......... Grin

Lately I've been messing with the carbs on my B4 in an attempt to stop engine backfiring.  The OEM carbs are Mikuni VM28SS with an accelerator pump.  I was running 115 mains with 17.5 pilots and having backfiring issues.  I went up to 20 pilots with no discernable difference, and last week decided to try 22.5's.  I ran the bike with them yesterday and it didn't want to run well with steady throttle...and still lots of backfiring.  So today...based on Ross's discussion earlier I decided to put a set of VM26SS carbs on.  They are similar to the 28's but they don't have an accelerator pump on them.  These carbs were on my Z1 resto when I bought it last fall.  The previous owner had bored the sleeves out to 1015 cc and installed some S&W cams, along with a 4/1 header and a set of pods on the intake.  The carbs had 122.5 mains and 17.5 pilots, and I decided for a first attempt to just leave them as they are.  I installed them this morning and went for a cruise out to Porteau cove and back.  The bike ran like a Deere!  Backfiring is gone.  Acceleration is smooth and right there when you grab the throttle.  The only issue is a slight hesitation when leaving a light, which I think can be corrected by adjusting the fuel air screws. 

As an aside...if anyone is planning to come out this way be prepared to ride the shoulder from Furry Bay to Brittannia due to heavy traffic.

 I always wonder about carbs today.. We had so little problems with them back in the day.
 And now people fiddle with them incessantly..at least some do..

Maybe part of it is..was hardly ever under 4,000rpm back then.

My memory parallels yours.  I don't remember any carb problems back then.  Maybe the problem is that we're still using those same carbs after 40 years.  In my case it the bike sat for 8 years with gas in the carbs that turned to crud.

I see it on the cars at work too.

Fuel now is different from fuel then, nevermind the ethanol.

If I have a tuning issue with an older carb, I usually end up going up a couple jet sizes and it fixes the problem.

Could you have possibly had a very small air leak somewhere on the carbs ? I've chased that one a few times.

I am thinking fuel, maybe worn brass, air leaks..
 And the big one ...being forced to ride more conservatively.... Than back then.... We just didn't putt around slow back then.
