bill you can borrow the tool if you like, i wont get to the 72 for a while
i used a spray on gasket goo to make it tacky on both sides, i wouldnt have until you mentioned it and i thought if it leaks and i didnt.....
i didnt leave out the o rings but after i got it all together and was adjusting the valves i realized i hadnt vaporblasted the cylinders Doh!
i has beadblasted them then sent them to wally intending to do them afterwards but got distracted (plain forgot)  now i am sealing the engine up and will put the whole engine in the machine and blast the cylinders

also i noticed that the valve cover didnt seat down on the head very, it had resistance in the middle, i noticed the top cam chain tower has the rubber blocks it sits on and they were bulged out so i removed it and tried removing the rubber blocks....well good job i did as the crubled to bits like coal shards,(showing my age)  that could be disastrous down inside, ordered 4 new ones....whew!!

Put a new set of rotors on the XLCR front end and cleaned it up a little.  For those that have seen the bike it came with some pulsating ( warped rotors ) and was not helping my wrists slowing down or stopping.   I now will swing to the rear as previous owner has a drilled disc and I have obtained the correct disc.   Likely wont stop as good as the drilled disc but should be able to slow the bike down as it was intended to from the factory.  Pics of the front from tonight.

John,

You'll not likely notice any difference in stopping ability. Drilling rotors allows for greater heat dissipation to decrease brake fade under heavy repeated breaking, such as racing, or many repeated rapid panic stops. On any street machine, under any normal driving, even a single panic stop, having drilled rotors does not provide any significant advantage.

Having drilled rotor on street machines is just a marketing ploy that targets the wannabe racer in us.

I thought drilled discs were to help move water (hence improve stopping)  on rainy days.

Yes fellas I did word that incorrectly.    The stock non-drilled discs worked perfectly on the street in 1978 and with the exception of panic stops I normally do not venture out in the rain often and do not race the bike so there are no extreme conditions.
I believe drilled discs do both, dissipate water and dissipate heat and for some they just look cooler.
Will snap a couple pics when I put the back one on for what its worth.

I remember several times back in the day travelling in rainy weather with little if any front brake stopping force on my Z1.  In those days discs weren't drilled.  That came a couple of years later, along with double discs, although the second disc was an option from pretty much day 1.

More progress on the Z1 this evening.  I installed the starter and removed and replaced the oil pan.  Why you ask?  Because when I was putting the pistons on I dropped a piece of my wrist pin puller into the sump. 

I have a lot of things held up for want of a part or two.  I need the center dash so I can install the clocks.  I need a headlight so that I can install the can and front signals.  I need tubes so that I can mount and install the tires.  Now that this year's taxes are paid it's time to start ordering again.

Very nice Scotty!  I like those custom carb boot plugs!  This is for the Z1A??

Today I spent some time on the B4.  Checked the compression.  Cleaned the plugs.  Changed the oil and filter.  Checked and adjusted valve clearance.  Went up one size on the pilot jets (to 22.5) to try to stop the coughing and backfiring.  It runs a bit better but is still backfiring in lower gears below about 4,000 rpm.  I wanted to change out one of the brake discs that's pulsing and change the fork oil but those jobs have to wait til next weekend.
