Nice video , I saw Shawn and Jen there..
 A big round of applause to the  huge effort and great results to this project, by Paul and his helpers.

 A nod should be given to the Cyclone that preceded this by half a decade, built by Joerns Mfg.
 And maybe they created theirs or had seen something that pushed them in that direction.
 By the time Ducati started using this in the 50,s the design was 40 years old already..
 Interesting how far back some if these designs go..

Coming back from a ride last week on my KZ1000 it almost died on my.  Felt like it was only running on two cylinders so I suspected a bad coil.  I managed to get home OK and parked the bike, but yesterday we planned to go out so I investigated the problem.  I fired up the bike, warmed it up a bit and while idling I began pulling plug wires.  No change in rpms for 1 and 4, but they dropped to a stall for 2 & 3.  Turns out coil was loose on both terminals and wasn't properly grounded.  I tightened up the bolts holding the coil to the frame and the bike ran perfectly again.

The output of the coils utilize a 'floating' ground (compare to the frame and the input) - shouldn't matter if they're attached to the frame or not (all mechanical vibration issues aside).  If they don't work unless connected to the frame, it's probably and indication the input winding is shorted to the the 'transformer' core - which may not be a big deal, but it would reduce the voltage to the input winding.

Hmm...that might explain why I have S#*tty performance at low rpm.

Reduced voltage would result in poor detonation along with a lot of soot on the related plugs.  I'll check to see if that's the case.  Those coils are different resistance than Z1 coils so I will need to find a spare to see if that fixes things.

I was lucky and all the bolts came out easily. Pretty good for a 35 year old bike with the original stator in it. Wouldn't that be something if the Ricks lasted that long.

You can rebuild, i.e. rewind, these yourself with the right wire, some patience, and being impervious to really sore fingers - but it can be done - I've done it.

that is on my 'bucket list' of motorcycle mechanical tasks to conquer, but I'm worried it will be right there with spooning your own rear 130 tire...... THAT I could have done without after experiencing it.
