Was a bit worried when I woke up and it was only 3C this morning but by 9:30 it was a balmy 5C , so off I went.

found some unexplored hills on the back side of the Malahat, definitely the steepest things I've been up that's for sure.

Learned a few things on my dirt bike today. #1 - I need to start working out!

#2 - don't bring hard boiled eggs as a snack......

no chicken was harmed in the making of that photo...

Sometimes, the really great stuff is when you stop....

#3 - always bring something else to eat other than hard boiled eggs...   Grin

I was only out for a few hours today, got wet, got dirty, got tired...had the time of my life.  There was one point where I was tossing the DR thru small 'ponds' and that smell of mud baking on the headers came thru my helmet and it took me right back to when I was a teenager on my old XR200....man what a good day.

Sounds, (and looks), like a terrific day! How was the cold startup this morning? Is that the Zumo on your handlebar? If so, did you find any maps that work? If you keep going out on your own you're going to need a Spot or something. Maybe Trevor can let go of one of his bikes and get a dual sport too...  Grin

The cold startup was the most exhausting thing all day. I know it's just me, the auto decompression on this thing makes it really hard to figure out where TDC on the compression is. I'll sort it out. The bike started and stopped flawlessly all day though which is great. No I haven't mounted the Zumo yet. I did get the file loaded to the microsd card but haven't been able to get it to work yet. I have thought about the SPOT for sure, it might be in the future plans.

Not sure if your bike is the same set-up as my old dr500.

Pull decomp lever in.

slowly kick bike till the decomp lever releases

Bring kicker back up to the top.

Give it a mighty kick.

I found when it was hot the throttle liked to be opened a hair, like 1/16 open. Hope this helps. Suck looking for a hill to park on all the time.

Ya, this thing has 2 decompression levers. An automatic one that is connected to the kickstarter and makes it really hard to tell where TDC is as it never really builds any resistance that you can feel and then a manual one on the handle bar that is used when you flood the engine. Some people disconnect the auto one and just use the manual one for that reason.
