I had the '75 VM28s on there, but there was something very wrong with the #3 carb I couldn't fix. So I rebuilt the VM26SSs I had on a shelf. They have a pilot screw rather than an air screw. I think ma Kaw used them in '77 & '78.

I jetted the 26s as per my kz1000 manual with 15 pilot, 105 mains, needle clip at 3rd ring, and pilot screw out 1 turn. Well, it started and ran, but only just. Severe bogging and missing on throttle, and major popping on decelleration. But...all the plugs looked equal, so I figured it was the carb settings.

I spoke with Rick at Bby Kaw. He said the mixture screw was way too lean, should be out at least 2 1/2 turns, and changed them to 3 turns. It still ran like crap, but the popping on decelleration was gone. I took off the carbs , upsized the jets 2 sizes to 20 pilots and 110 mains, and mixture screws to 2 turns because it smelled rch at idle.

It ran fantastic. Choke on, push start button, choke off, idle.  It was just that easy. Still smelled a bit rich so turned in the mixture screws to 1 1/2 turns. Better and still no popping. A little boggey at wide open throttle, so I could probably upsize the mains, but I think I'll just leave it. Now she's ready for a trip somewhere.

As for the VM28 #3 carb, I'll take another look at it sometime. Otherwise, it's a perfect set, so worth persuing.

I have a set of VM26SS carbs with air screws that were on my Z1B rebuild.  I haven't used them on anything yet but was thinking of putting them on the B4 to try to stop the barking.  Last weekend I took the VM28 pumpers off and went up to 22.5 pilots and re-installed.  It helped but still not right.  Compression was 140,125,120,140 from L to R.  Plugs 1 to 3 were a bit dry.  4 was a bit sooty.  Checked valve clearance and changed one shim.  I didn't mechanically synch the carbs before re-installing...I just forgot.

I also tried to install that disc you gave me.  It's smaller dia than the ones I have so I need to find another one to stop the brake pulsing.  I should have checked before pulling the wheel off my bike, which was work well wasted!  Wish I had a bigger garage as there's no room for a beer fridge!

Bill,
I gotta think, with a stock motor, and maybe a 4-1 header, 22.5 pilot jets should be rich enough. Maybe try enriching your air screws. Maybe try it with the screws out one turn rather than 1 1/2 turns, or even richer.

How well does it start when cold? Does it idle without messing with the idle screw? Does it seem to hunt riding at low rpms? Is the idle consistent when riding around town?  Does it take a bit of riding until it gets warm enough to be smooth?
