OK I'll be there, thanks Shawn for the leakdown tester, got to try it out on one cylinder and had less than 5% leak down, at least that was some good news,
couldn't try the other cylinders as the PO has manged to crossthread the other 3 spark plugs, just F%^^%$ unbelievable. I'm in shock, it's just unbelievable.

How far away did this bike come from? It may be worth the effort to visit the man in person.

Okay see you on Sunday.     My experience with a properly installed helicoil is they are stronger than the aluminum threading that they replace so you can look on the bright side with that aspect.

Not my intention to hijack this thread but one question, what is the thread used in those spark plugs? (It's for the GS1000S)
I may go purchase a Helicoil kit?
The pitch is 1.25 I believe.

Before you helical, try chasing the hole with a tap first.

One of the threads is pretty messed up but I might be able to salvage one or two of them by re- tapping.
Does anyone have a M14X1.25 tap for the spark plug hole? My kit has M14X1.5 only.
I checked out Timeserts and they look like a better option than the Helicoil for spark plug holes, (and Drain Plugs)
If I buy the kit and and a 15mm insert pack, they come with 10 inserts so I'll do all 4 while I'm at it.

Ross, don't use a tap.

Taps are for cutting threads in new metal, they will remove material and make a bad situation worse.

The one I linked is specific to spark plug holes but may not be in the size for your bike. You can usually buy a full set of metric or SAE units from 8mm to 18mm or 1/4 - 11/16.

These will restore the thread without removing material, they work by re-forming the thread rather than cutting it.

We use them at work a lot and they work great.
