I made one of those once, found it was very expensive to maintain and required constant supervision. It worked well for a few years, then became increasingly reluctant to respond to my commands. After I'd had it for about 15 years I found it was so much easier to just open the damn door myself that I quit beeping at out loud and just beeped under my breath in flustration .....  A few of my friends have had similar experiences with the ones they made.
