This is an interesting video covering gasoline octanes. While it is U.S. based, and does NOT cover the devastating effects of ethanol on components, and unfortunately does NOT fully explain how high octane prevents knock/pre-ignition/pinging, it does explain low tier and top tier gasoline additives. It does explain also, that you are now officially allowed to publicly laugh out loud at persons exclaiming higher fuel economy and power when using higher octane fuels.

Bit of a contradiction in that...
....Using premiume gas in an engine that doesn't call for it is a waste of money
....premium gas contains more detergents so will help keep your engine cleaner
I'm surprised they didn't touch on one of the biggest lores on the internet: using Premium gasoline causes carbon build up and eventual engine failure.

I recall reading somewhere that ethanol actually increases gas octane.

But it's BTU's are a lot lower so even though it's cheaper, you need to burn more of it.
Alcohol carbs need to be jetted nearly double what gasoline carbs are.

Ethanol In gasoline is the result of very successful corn farmer lobbyists in Washington DC, and successful environmentalist lobbyists. What it has done is Increase the cost of corn flour 4 fold for poor families in Latin America, increase fuel costs, and reduce fuel economy through lower BTU energy fuel.

I'm not a fan of ethanol for a lot of reasons, primarily because of what it does to my carburetors. It's considered a low carbon alternative because growing the feedstock takes up carbon and burning the fuel releases it. But a lot of carbon is used to grow the feedstock, harvest it and convert it to ethanol, so it's not as environmentally friendly as some people would claim. That said, I'm not sure you're right about that first claim Steve. For one thing, S America doesn't use corn to make ethanol. They use sugar cane, so how does that influence the price of corn flour? Also, ethanol can be produced more cheaply than gasoline in S America, so the cost savings are passed on to motorists when they buy fuel. (Brazil uses E25 in their vehicles and has many models capable of running on E100.) I would guess a strong US dollar would have more influence over the price of just about anything worldwide because it's the world's reserve currency.
