Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: Runningdog on August 17, 2023, 12:11:27 PM I guess whether or not I come along depends on what the closest fire does, and if we're still in the house on Saturday.

Yes I just seen the fires in your area. Not good.Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: hardrockminer on August 17, 2023, 07:41:55 PM We were in Howser a couple of days ago and everything was fine. We drove down to Castlegar and across to Midway. There was smoke in Midway but no fires. The next day we went to Keremeos and then over to Princeton. Big fire in the Ashanola Valley. Could see flames on very steep slopes. We came up through Merritt in smoke all the way to Chase. The Adams Lake fires are the main source around here.
I feel sorry for the people in Yk. Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: Timtone on August 17, 2023, 07:49:00 PM I was planning on following along on this one, but the same fire Howard mentioned is going to kill it for me as well.
The evacuation alert stops about 5 clicks from Fintry. (which is where I live now). I would say based on the map, Running Dog might be on Evacuation notice. Most of the Rose Valley area is. Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: Hawkeye on August 17, 2023, 08:16:16 PM Right now, the smoke column is blowing straight past my house. As long as the wind stays down, no embers should cross the lake. UBCO will go before this neighbourhood.

Post by: kaw74 on August 18, 2023, 08:58:19 AM I think that maybe a later date might be better for a ride to Nakusp when things settle down with all the fires around us.
Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: hardrockminer on August 18, 2023, 01:45:35 PM If anyone needs a place to crash while the fire burns....I have my RV set up in the back yard. It can handle a couple of adults and a couple of kids.
Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: Steve G. on August 18, 2023, 02:25:51 PM Glad I don’t live in Westbank!!
Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: hardrockminer on August 18, 2023, 05:06:15 PM I may need the RV for myself. They just evacuated the Little Shuswap Indian Band from the East end of the lake. We are on the West end, about 5km away from them. Winds this morning were light from the south, but this afternoon they shifted to brisk from the north. That means the Adams Lake East fire is advancing towards us. We can see a huge cloud of smoke billowing out of the Adams Lake valley towards Slammin Arm. It is big and nasty looking.

This morning there was quite a lot of black bits in my driveway. I found one piece in the back yard about 7" x 1" that was charred on one side. Definitely a good time not to leave town.
Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: Twisted_Twin on August 18, 2023, 08:15:35 PM We're a long way out but we've heard of people from Yellow Knife coming to Manitoba for a place to stay.
We've got RV space for anyone who needs a place to land. Shelter, food and water for critters too. Anybody who gets displaced from anywhere can stay with us until the chaos dies down. I came pass your area today and traffic backed up from the airport to Winfield. Took me 3-1/2 hour to get home from Glenmore. Did Howard get Evacuated?Title: Re: Nakusp ride. I heard you guys are on Evac notice.Yes, Chase and area were put on evac alert last night. We watched the fire glow from our driveway as it got darker and darker, and I guess embers blew over to Turtle Valley where another fire started. Turtle Valley was put on evac order. So we decided to head out for the night around 10 pm. Currently boondocking at the Pritchard bridge. Will re-assess in the morning. Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: hardrockminer on August 19, 2023, 04:45:10 PM We are back in Chase after an eventful night that included power bumps along with two approaching forest fires. Winds have died down and are no longer whipping up the flames but the smoke is quite thick today. The water bombers are constantly flying overhead...not sure where they are getting water but it appears not from Little Shuswap Lake. We will stay here unless the smoke gets to us.

Its really smokey here in Falkland .Was 7 this morning with clear skies so that must be coming from Turtle Valley.Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: Runningdog on August 20, 2023, 09:01:37 AM Glad I don’t live in Westbank!! Oh, we don't live in Westbank any more, we're camped at friends in Peachland for the next few days or weeks. Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: Steve G. on August 20, 2023, 11:21:00 AM I’ve got family in Kaleeden . They’ve been camping in Hedly the last week. No issues at all, other than smoke.
Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: hardrockminer on August 20, 2023, 11:44:19 AM Chase was very smokey early this morning when I went out for a bike ride. I wore a mask but it didn't show any effect from breathing through it. The smoke has lifted and air is now tolerable for walks, runs or whatever. Every couple of minutes a water bomber roars overhead...something we didn't hear when they were working on the two fires before Friday.
Reports suggest the fire is slowly spreading in an easterly direction...towards Salmon Arm. If we get another windy day I would not be surprised to see the fire reach them. We're due for a weather change...20 mm of rain along with thunderstorms is forecast in a couple of days. Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: hardrockminer on August 21, 2023, 07:39:03 PM Out for an early bike ride again, and smokier than yesterday. I finished up on my spinner.
I heard today that last Thursday the fire service had lit backfires that got away on them when the wind shifted on Friday, causing the conflagration that engulfed Squilax, Lee Creek, Scotch Creek and Celista. It also caused the evacuation of Turtle Valley when the fire crossed the road. I hope when it's all said and done they investigate how the fire developed. I also heard on CBC news this morning that roughly 300 people stayed in place to protect their homes and businesses. One of them was the district rep for the area and he said they are getting no help from bc fire service. This evening the wind is shifting again, this time coming from the east and north. We set up a sprinkler on our roof to keep things wet, just incase the fire reverses course and heads towards Chase. Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: kaw74 on September 12, 2023, 06:20:57 PM Any interests in a ride this Saturday to Nakusp for lunch?
Meet at Tim's highway 6 Vernon and leave around 10am. Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: jetta90 on September 13, 2023, 12:25:33 AM Sorry Henry....I went up to Nakusp last Sunday for the Moto Giro. It'll be a great ride for you, Timtone and the others that go this coming weekend. Love the road!
Expect an abundance of bugs on your ride. It's a little messy on the rider and bike when they go splat. :( Enjoy the ride and be safe. Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: Runningdog on September 13, 2023, 06:26:56 AM Yeah, good possibility I can make it. We'll see what pops up later in week.
Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: Timtone on September 13, 2023, 09:00:28 AM I am good to go.
Let us know when and where. Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: Hawkeye on September 13, 2023, 08:41:46 PM Good so far. Be good to get in a fall ride.
Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: kaw74 on September 15, 2023, 08:41:52 AM Shall we meet at the usual place Tim Horton highway 6 Vernon and leave at 10?
Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: jetta90 on September 15, 2023, 07:30:02 PM As a heads up.....watch for two (very close to each other) marked road areas that are gravel. Youu'll encounter them as you descend towards Needles ferry heading to Nakusp. They're only 10 or 20 ft in length each, about 25 kms (?) west of Needles ferry dock where the road gets very narrow.
Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: kaw74 on September 15, 2023, 08:02:18 PM Thanks for the warning.
Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: Hawkeye on September 16, 2023, 07:29:08 PM Those patches are now patched. Nice new pavement.
Talk about a great day for a ride. About 12 C setting out, 27 in the afternoon. Really good road for most of the way. You could tell which stretches are maintained by the lowest bidder. Henry, Tim and I had a fun day. We were joined by Ken and his friend Henry as we were finishing lunch. Hey, Henry. I found my sheepskin in the neighbourhood after I got home. Just wish I'd had it for the ride. Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: kaw74 on September 16, 2023, 08:33:38 PM Those patches are now patched. Nice new pavement. Thats great that you found it. Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: Hawkeye on September 17, 2023, 08:37:08 PM Between leg cramps, numb butt and my helmet pressing the arms of my glasses into my skull, I had to stop, so I pulled in to the gas station in Lumby. Gassed up, grabbed a bag of chips and a coke for supper and walked around a bit. Then I was ready for the rest of the trip home.
A day well frittered. Sitting around home for the evening pointed out how much work we put in working those great twisties. Great scenery and exercise as a bonus. Title: Re: Nakusp ride. Post by: Timtone on October 01, 2023, 09:11:37 PM Quite a fantastic day this one was.
Thanks guys. Lunch seemed even better than usual at the Leland. Great company. It was nice to meet Ken's buddy Henry, and to talk to Ken again. It would have been nice to see Ken's shop and what he is up to, but we were kind of behind schedule I think. Cheers. |
