Chances are we'll see the usual suspects at the Peachland Bike show.  We can toss around a few ideas, on where, and when to gather to tell lies.  The Little Cafe in Falkland we have met at in the past has had to cut back their hours due to changes in ownership and staffing issues.  BUT they are open from Wednesdays through the weekend.  At least they were Shen I was there a week or two ago.  These days, one never knows. The Pub across the street has had it's ups and downs in recent months.  Sometimes it's good, other times....not so much.  The Home Cafe in Sorrento has always been good. Open to other suggestions.

Friday this week.  Nico and I riding up to Mt. Baker.  Meet at the Starbucks on Sumas way in Abbotsford with the intent of crossing the border around 9:00.  Fuel up in Sumas.  Bring your own coffee and snacks for a break at the top.  Back down for lunch, maybe at Bob’s Burger and Brew, in Sumas.  Home later in the afternoon. 

You’ll still need the ArriveCAN app and usual border crossing identification.

Baker forecast showing a chilly -4 at 9am rising to +5 at noon.  A bit too chilly for my blood.  :-\

We've done rides in the late fall up country when it warmed up to -4........electric  jacket and fairing, beautiful rides.

Dave, I dunno where you got that forecast, but it’s totally f****d.  It was 14C all the way to Abbotsford then 13C and foggy.  As we left Sumas it soon cleared and warmed all the way to the top,18C.  It continued to warm all the way down, 24C at Sumas.   Blue bird and warm all day.  You missed a great ride.

Sorry I missed it.  I went for a ride up to Whistler instead.  Was a little cool riding up, but warmer on the way back.  Any pictures of your ride?

I was feeling much better this morning and was going to come for coffee, I will go out later and just stay local.
will be there on Sunday for sure.

I probably won’t be going to coffees for a while.  My bike has developed a “knock”.  I’ll not ride it until I can get it diagnosed.  My appointment at Checkpoint Yamaha isn’t until the 20th.

It’s an odd thing.  At first I wasn’t sure I was really hearing it.  It’s gotten louder and more frequent.  Don’t hear it at idle or revving at a standstill.  Don’t hear it on the centre stand in gear.  Not sure if it’s there at speed.  Once underway, I hear an occasional knock, at least in 1st and 2nd gear, under light load.  Doesn’t seem to be there under harder acceleration.  It is noticeable coasting in gear with the clutch lever pulled in.  It is not at all rhythmic or regular.  Chain and sprockets look good.

Unfortunately the bike is 2 1/2 months off warranty.

Maybe a bad individual coil ?

I've had a knock like that turn out to be a cracked piston skirt.

  That is very odd for a Yamaha. They make very well engineered bikes and engines. I will be very interested to hear the diagnosis of this knock.
 It could be many different causes.

Ya, thanks Howard, I had read that.  I did a real good inspection of the chain and sprockets.  All looks good with no tension differences along the chain.

I have to say, I’m not impressed with G. A. Checkpoint communication.  When I dropped the bike off, they said they would call before someone looked at it.  So I waited.  Finally I called them just now.

Turns out the Yamaha warranty guy was there later that day and took it for a ride.  All he said was the chain was way too tight.  Ever since (way back when) someone, Steve I think, pointed out my loose chain, I’ve paid close attention to the tension.  Now, the spec in the manual has the chain really tight.  From all I read about it, the spec is really tight, and should be adhered to.  So I did.  The girl on the phone says that because the chain was so tight, the chain and sprockets are prematurely worn.  I think they look just fine, but oh well, I’ll have them replaced.

But I’ll definitely go in tomorrow to speak with someone face to face about proper tension.  And price/quality options.  Hopefully it’s as simple as worn chain/sprockets.

I wish they had called me.  I’d probably have had the bike back by now, or at least had the chain/sprockets ordered.

Ross, aside from worrysome issues with communication, this may be the solution, fairly simple to sort out, at least.   Lets hope.

Thanks very much for the offer Roy.  The weather forecast is S#*te now for quite a while.  The parts should be in in Friday but their service department is unmanned on Saturday, so the bike won’t be ready until next week.  If I’m jones-ing to ride in the rain I’ll take you up on the offer.  Sandy will be away next week, so I may need a ride out to Checkpoint to get the bike though. 

I was taking it easy on you because the bike was out of warranty.

No worries Steve.  The chain was excessively loose.  I hadn’t attended to it at that point since I’d bought the bike.  Total lack of attention on my part.  My issue now is, and something I’ll clear up with Checkpoint, that the owners manual specs the chain way too tight, or I’m misreading it.

  Chain tension specs and adjustments are sometimes very odd. Chatted about this at Wednesday coffee,,,,, my  big red pig offers instructions calling for on side stand with 150 pounds, or my third leg, whilst distance of 1 3/8 to 2 1/4 inches , 1/2 way between centre pivot of swingarm and centre of wheel. Frustrating.  Maybe 2 legs, and 1/2 my belly??

Today when John and I arrived at Fresh Street, our usual table was occupied by about a dozen construction workers, but fortunately they moved off before 10:00, I told Steve that John told them to bugger off. HaHa
I think they just had to get back to work.

BTW Steve, I reckon I bought my Apollo 10speed in 1971 or 1972 in Lethbridge with money from delivering flyers.  Seems to me I paid $90 or $100.  Later in 1973 I got my first hourly part time job in that same bicycle shop.  $1.10/hr I seem to recall.  Bert&Macs Cycle, Canada’s oldest Suzuki dealer as well.  They also sold CanAms and Skidoos as well as hockey equipment.

Yup same Apollo as mine.  I ditched the fenders.  Mine was a fine metallic mauve colour.  It got stolen from school one day in winter.  I followed the tracks in the snow and found it in a lane quite a ways from school.  Do damage.  Luckily there was a inch of fresh snow.

As per our discussion, I took a look at the 77 CB750 red paint.  Definitely worth thinking about.  Cost would e higher than black as the red is a three coat candy red.  But it sure does look nice.

Further to our discussion today, I’ve order new brake lines for the CB 750.  I’ve pretty much decided not to bother with a collector plate.  I’ll make her a good runner and bit the bullet on insurance.  Also I’ve decided on a name for her.  My last project was the LedZed.  This one is Black Betty.  I was thinking of Black Beauty, but she’s kinda plain, so it’s Black Betty.  No offence meant to all the Bettys out there.

  A motorcycle stall out on the very worst place for a motorcycle to breakdown, in the entire world!!!!!

   It’s got to be just a plug in, rather than a component failure.

I think it unlikely that the APS ( apparently it’s not a TPS) is faulty.  It’s an Accelerator Position Sensor.  Most likely a connection I reckon.  It quit once more on my way home.  Thankfully I coasted into a parking lot where it rectified itself again.  And thankfully I got across the Patullo Bridge ok.

I got home and plugged in my code reader.  Sure enough, APS error.  A bit of a process to get at it.  All kinds of different fasteners to remove 5 plastic panels in order to lift the tank before disconnecting the fuel pump electrics, fuel line, and vacuum lines.  Then the APS is right there.  I disconnected the two plugs (they looked fine) and sprayed on some de-oxidizer. 

Reassembled and rode uptown to the library.  Short ride but all good.  Think I’ll not go out on the highway or across any bridges for a while.

So, I took the Tracer900 out for a 1 3/4 hr ride this morning.  Rode around Belcarra, Anmore, Buntzen Lake.  The Yamaha didn’t miss a beat.  Perhaps (

  I’ve taken the Red Pig out of slumber, to analyze vibration feedback after extensive engine modifications. Ummm, I changed the spark plug. The engine still gives off indications that it is running . So that’s good,,,,,,,plus I just put a fresh battery in my Omega, so there’s that I guess.

BCAA came about 11:40.  Got the Yamaha started and went straight to Edmonds Battery in Bby and had it tested.  300 CCA and 12.7 volts.  Mind you that’s coming straight off the ride along hwy10 and Alex Fraser Bridge.

So it should be fine.  I’ll check the voltage tomorrow and see how much it drops.

I put the light weight jumper cables in my pannier.

  BCAA is pretty handy, from my experience.

   Be curious to see the status of your battery considering the potential remote riding you have planned.

After the bike sat for a couple of hours after I got home, the battery had 12.6 volts.  We’ll see what it is in the morning.

This morning the battery is at 12.55 volts.  I reckon it’ll do for a while.

Further to our discussion of SOHC CB750s.  Delkevic makes a 4 into 1 stainless exhaust.  Delivered for about $520.  Accommodates the centre stand.  I thought they produced a 4 into 2, but sadly not.

  Any thoughts on coffee tomorrow, re: the weather forecast Wednesday morning?  My vehicle is highly capable  in the conditions they are forecasting, but others may be not comfortable with those conditions.

Yesterday in the village of Maple Ridge the idiot alert took hold several hours before any snowfall was to arrive.   The work vehicles were salting, sanding and preparing the roads for the onslaught ahead.  Sounds of grinding and twisting of metal and the honking of horns as many use to signal they are not stopping at stop signs or red lights.   The sounds of floored engines in low gears surrounded us.   Now that the snow is upon us   it would seems staying on the roadways are merely a suggestion for some.   It is now quiet here and just waiting for the villagers to return home in a day or two with new vehicles mostly with custom signage on them from several body shop companies.   We have 9 inches here right now and still coming down hard.   Looks like it is time for me to dress warmly, grab a fold away chair and a giant popcorn and head down to the street corner and sit and watch the show for a while.
Garage time can wait until later!

  City of Surrey has been very aggressive the last week with salt brine and huge amounts of salt on the roads. Which have done sweet bugger all towards snow management. Confirmed a full 12” on the hood of my truck 10 minutes ago. I have no worries with the capability of my little 4x4 Ranger with new Toyo snowflake trrrain tires, I’m able to push through 3’ of fresh snow , just pushing it out of the way. It’s always the other low IQ entities with driving practices in alignment with their former homes in tropical regions of the world, ill equipped vehicles and completely incapable skills.
 

Did I fail to mention to unplug your electric car during this cold snap.   The government has told BC and Alberta they might have black outs from over usage.

Getting a bit warmer here, +2C.  Still snowing small, high water content flakes.  25cm accumulation but settling as it snows.  Supposed to stay below freezing overnight with more snow later tomorrow before turning to rain later in the week.  Warm, +6C on Sunday. 

Took a rip around the neighbourhood with the Nissan in 4x4.  What a hoot!  But very very slick.

Been interesting reading the internet comments from all over North America about the issues people are having with their wonderful modern wizz bang electric vehicles.  I can hardly wait for the powers to be to ban all ICE vehicles. Big Brother is watching you.  And he knows Dilly Squat about the real world.

  My experience working at an official Tesla repair centre,  make it very aware to me the shortcomings of battery output in cold weather, indeed charging in cold , company mandates that we must never leave the cars outside below predicted -10c. Add the 1.5% battery draw daily even just sitting there in the driveway in non frigid temperatures.

  I went for a drive today to investigate  road conditions. Delivery trucks from 3/4  ton vans to Hino cab over 3 tons are found at corners and back roads, front wheel drive sedans found along all hill climbs  with summer tires.  Extensive use of salt and salt brine has done nothi g to disperse the 12”+ we got here ( as of 3pm ).

It’s 1C at my house in New West.  I measured just now 30cm of snow on the patio table.  Expecting -4C overnight.  More snow expected tomorrow afternoon/evening/overnight.  Main roads in New West clear and wet, all other roads deep snow over ice.  Clear wet roads may well freeze overnight.  Hard to say from forecasts how much snow we’ll get from the next system arriving later tomorrow.  Could be a little, or a lot of snow before it turns to rain overnight Thursday night.

Just now though I’m sitting in my lazyboy with a tequila and lime imagining that I’m lounging on the beach in Mexico.  

Not going to coffee tomorrow fellas.

As far as electric vehicles go, I’m at the point where I just chuckle.  I’ll drive my ICEs until I can’t, for whatever reasons.  My truck is a 2006, my car is a 2019, motorcycles are 2019 and 1975.  All will last me until I can’t get gasoline. 

People have ditched their ICEs for their own reasons, none of which are compelling to me.  For me now, it’s a case of schadenfreude.

Does anyone happen to have an inductive pickup timing light that I can borrow?  I can’t get my old hardwired timing light onto the #2 or #3 spark plugs because of how they are situated in the CB750.

I had done a static timing but wanted to make sure it was dead on with a timing light.  And dammit, one thing leads to another.  I started it up, but it seemed a bit off.  Wouldn’t you know it, #3 isn’t firing.  There’s fuel in the bowl and there is spark, but no fire.  Exhaust pipe is cold.  Dammit, carbs have to come off…again. 

But I can still check the dynamic timing if I can obtain an inductive timing light.

I have one Ross - not 100% sure it works but it did the last time I used it (sometime in the last couple of years).  Not sure when I'll be out for coffee next though...

  Save a seat lads, running late tomorrow.

Finally feeling mostly back to normal.  Washed the Yamaha this morning and tried once again to get #3 cylinder on the CB750 to fire.  I think there’s an obstruction in the pilot system in the carb body.  Double dammit.

Will insure the Yamaha tomorrow and ride it to coffee on Sunday.

I won’t be at coffee on Wednesday.  My neighbour broke his leg.  Riding his Africa Twin on the Douglas Lake Road in the mud.  I’m driving him to the orthopaedic surgeon Wednesday at 9:00.

   Is that the fellow that had issues with the fork seal issues on his Africa Twin?

   Geez, I've been down Douglas Lake Rd when it was popcorn dry, not a problem. But mud turns anything into gumbo. How did he evacuate out of there?

He and a friend went up there, not sure exactly when, last weekend or early last week.  They had snow up on the Coke and rain in Merritt.  It had stopped raining when they were on the Douglas Lake road.  I guess the road, on the gravel was good until it wasn’t.  He got into some slimy stuff and got fairly well whoed up, but then at a slow speed the front went out and down he went.  Left leg under the bike.  Cracked the big bone (fibula?).  He didn’t know it was broken as he could put “some” weight on it.  His friend picked up the bike and they continued on to their campsite on Westside Road.  Big swelling overnight.  They road back the next day and he spent 10 hours in Emergency at RCH.  There’s supposed to be an ortho surgeon on but I guess he wasn’t available so Michael had to make an appointment, earliest is Wednesday morning.  Our health care system is thoroughly broken.

Yes, it is the fellow with the NFG fork seals and left side oil leak.  Also after a mishap when on our trip a couple of years ago (the one where Malcolm wrecked his ankle) he had to get the display replaced.  Well Honda replaced it with a defective one.  It would totally cut out at times while riding.  Honda said “bring it in when it’s not working and we’ll take a look at it”.  Well, it was so intermittent, and would right itself, so basically he was stuck with a defective display.  Fast forward and he got a recall notice.  Now Honda admits that the displays are NFG.  So much for Honda quality.  Go figure.

   It's good that he didn't go up alone. Serious business!!

When I worked at Nicola Valley Hospital a group of guys came in with their buddy who had a broken leg. Also Douglas lake road. People need to check their ego's and ride at a pace which is safe for themselves not the group. And mud is horrible with most dual sport tires.

  I’m following a forum covering Dempster Highway riders this season. 2 deaths already. The last 85 miles from Inuvik to Tuk especially, is being rather difficult to say the least.
  At least  so far this year there are no Northern Grizzlies hanging out at Eagle Plains eating tenters.

Sorry mate.  I’ve no interest in driving on that highway except to get the heck out of Dodge.  Certainly not in both directions in one day if I can avoid it.

  Congratulations on Bob's new purchase 2024 Yamaha Tracer 900 GT [I think that's the model] which he showed up on at Wednesday coffee.  A completely different bike compared to his old Yamaha Super Tenere 1200, but I think it will turn out to be a much easier bike to ride in most cases within suburban Vancouver City. 150 ibs less weight, much better handling, perhaps a step down in overall comfort with less leg room. Probably slightly less capable offroad, only because of the very low slung exhaust muffler/catalytic converter.

It’s the Tracer9 GT+.  Super nice bike.  All the bells and whistles.

Further to our discussion of fuels in our motorcycles, I decided to drain the float bowls in my CB750 to check for any water.  They were all perfect, no water visible.

The Ethanol adsorbs the water and it is burnt.

  I’ve got family coming in tomorrow unfortunately not be at mid week coffee lads, July 24.

Gonna be running late August 7th coffee lads.

Further to our conversation about timing lights and timing.  I misremembered about the timing marks on my CB750.  There are two timing marks.  The “T” mark denotes top dead centre.  Then there is a “F” mark that denotes the timing at idle.  I got to wondering if I’d timed it in error to the TDC mark (sometimes I do stupid stuff).  So I checked it today.  All good, timed to the “F” mark.  Whew

  Beancans!!  That’s the nickname of the mufflers on John’s Mk111 Commando. Official name is “Reverse Cone”, but like the pre Mk111 commando muffler nick name is “Peashooter”., everything  has a nickname.

  John, your bike’s left side idle circuit is totally plugged.  If I remember and can find  some wire, I’ll give you the correct stuff to use.

Thank you Steve for giving my Norton the heavy leg to get it running after coffee.   There is more to the story afterwards and I will share next time we get together.

I was disappointed to find that Fresh Street have re-arranged their store with less options.
They longer have a range of pastries to have with your coffee.
Others were disappointed with the service provided.

 

  Their lack of service was not impressive. The normal girl has returned to school, the new girl was having her break when you guys showed up. Management dropped the ball big time..you don’t schedule the coffee shop worker their coffee break during the busiest time of the day unless you have a temp fillin . Very basic stuff.
  They are doing big changes to their coffee bar, I think turning it into a deli /cafe combo.. another upper management decision  which we shall see if it’s correct. I never bought their pastries , I got my muffin over at the bakery area..

They have moved the pastries to the back of the store now, still there just a different location.
