Actually provided the bearings are OK I should be able to get it running quite easily. It has the Nikasil bores I think (weak magnetic attraction) which Stan reckons are bulletproof.
Paintwork is reasonable but lots of rusty chrome and corrosion on the alloy, exhaust is shot.
It was pretty hard for Ross and I to get a good feel, it's surrounded by lots of junk and we were working by flashlight.

The owner also has an early Virago 1100 which I promised to get running for him, I could ask if he's willing to sell that.

Hi all,

I'm new to the club and feel the need to start participating in the chatter. Just thought I'd drop a line to say hi and encourage others to come out for a Sunday morning brew (coffee, that is).  I've been welcomed warmly to the couple of meetings I've attended so far, the guys I've met are all good eggs with open minded tastes and tolerances despite the varied bike styles owned. Excellent...life is too rich to get stuck thumbing your nose at others tastes that are different from your own. We all like older, mechanically oriented bikes to work on and ride, period. Some are meticulously restored Sunday bikes, some are year round riders with rich, well earned patina. There are so few of us around to begin that support is key, and should be enjoyed. The camaraderie of the riding/wrenching experience makes it that much more enjoyable, I think.

Anyway, enough philosophising. Posted (I hope I did this right) are a couple pics of last Sunday afternoon's 'tech' session. I've got a video clip of Stan licking to life Big Red but it's too big to post, sorry. She sure sounded good though , the cocophony of mechanical noises, awesome!

My particular distraction at the moment is mid 70's Italian standards, Guzzis no less. I'll post some pictures of my stalled project in the Member's Bikes section soon. I joined up in hopes of other's kicking my butt to get motivated to advance my progress. Looks like it's working!

As Rob said, we had a great coffee meeting.  Rob, Stan, Nico, John, and I were there.  I brought along some show-and-tell stuff, a really cool stud extractor set, some soda blasted and polished bits, a front hub with broken off screw head, and a swing arm with stuck roller bearing races.

At our previous coffee I had mentioned that I had a swing arm with stuck roller bearing races that I couldn't get out.  Stan offered to put a bead of weld around the inside to shrink them and drift them out.  So at this meeting I brought the swing arm along.  After coffee we all headed out in a convoy to Stan's house.  You can see in one of Rob's photos, Stan is welding.  It worked like a charm. 

After that Stan tickled his '47 Indian to life for us.  Wonderful sounds and WAY too much fun!

That's what it's all about.  Friends, fun, and motorcycles.

See you on Sunday.  It's supposed to be pissing rain, but if Roy is up to it as well, and if I don't have any show-and-tell to bring, then I may even ride rather than drive!  If any of you have any show-and-tell, photos, parts etc., bring it along.

Ross, you said you had a really cool stud extractor set. What kind is it ? A friend of mine has 4 broken exhaust bolts courtesy of the previous owner, who also drilled partway into them. Looking for solutions. Is anyone welcome at the Sunday coffee meetings ?

Every one is welcome at our Sunday coffee.  You could even bring your mum if you want to. 

Unfortunately my stud extractor only works with studs that are intact.  Sounds like drilling and heely (sp) coiling is your option.

I also host a monthly shop night in my garage (The second Thursday night of the month).  That's this Thursday night the 8th of December.  At today's coffee for show and tell, Rob brought his "Carbtune Pro" synchronizer.  Hopefully we'll try it out on my KZ 1000 this Thursday night and compare with my vacuum gauges.
Shoot for 7:00 PM, 443 Garrett Street, New Westminster, around back in the garage.

It will be festive since we decorated the garage today for a party I'm hosting Wednesday night.

Stan, John, Rob, and I met for weekly coffee this morning.  As always there was great conversation.  There were a couple of really great practical items that came out of it though.  

I mentioned that I was having trouble removing the seal from my Z1 forks.  Stan is THE MAN!!  He suggested making a washer to togggle inside the seal.  Then use it as backing for a makeshift slide hammer.  This I did when I got home using ready rod and some heavy steal spacers I had kicking around.  It worked like a charm!!

The problem I have now is that a previous owner has really scared the inside of the fork with a screw driver while removing the seals.  I am pretty sure it will leak between the seal and the fork.  I'm not sure how to deal with that one.

The second thing that came out of our meeting was that Rob had brought along his Carbtune Pro synchronizer unit.  I had braved the black ice to ride my 77 KZ1000.  We hooked up the synchronizer just to see how it worked.  Seems really nice.  It uses metal rods rather than fluid and the result is quite a smooth reading.  When I get a chance, I'll get Rob to bring it over and we'll use it to synch my carbs and compare with my vacuum gauges.

All in all a great coffee get together.

 I use a sharpened awl or small driil bit to put 2 holes in the metal portion of the seal..180 degrees apart.
 Then thread in a sheetmetal screw till it starts to self-tap and bite.. both holes.
  Use a thin pce of wood or  smooth aluminum shim to protect the fork edge, the pry up the screw with a claw hammer.. opnly a millimeter, then the other.. back and forth till its out..

 easy..

 The gouges.. fix with JB, then after curing, clean it up..

It's tough to keep the get togethers going.  There are usually only four, five, or on occasion, six  of us that show up for coffee on Sundays.  And usually only two or three of us that come out to a shop night once a month.  But even with the small group, I enjoy them immensely.  We all have things to contribute, and Stan and John in particular, have a wealth of knowledge and experience.  The suggestions they have given so some of my quandaries have been spot on.  But I'll persist in posting the coffee and shop meetings until no one at all shows up.  Perhaps over time the core group will grow to the point that prodding people to come out won't be necessary.

Our group will be one less now that Nico has moved to Parksville.  He's been a good friend and riding companion.  I know I'll see him occasionally, but i'll miss him.  Now if I could just get him to sign up for the BCCMC!  I know there must be some members over there that he could hook up with.

I bought a bunch of stuff at the MC show including a new helmut.  But the most exciting purchase was, Roy and I signed up for the Westwood Superbike Riding course in July.  Can't wait.

Any one interested in doing some soda blasting at the U-blast place in Langley?  They don't normally reserve machines, but if we get enough guys at one time I think they will.  There is a $20 charge to clean the machine prior to using soda as they have to pretty much dismantle it to ensure no contamination of the soda.  We can split the cost or maybe even ask them to waive it if we get enough guys.  I'll be ready to do some in the next few weeks.  I will have carb bodies and engine cases to do. Probably take an hour or so.

Roy, you're right Mr. Peter's Hillman-powered Royal Enfield...it's a real work of art...spectacular. I really hope to see it again, Ive got lots of questions about it's construction and, no doubt, interesting history. We must campaign to get it written up and in a magazine someplace. Can you post the cell phone pics you took, Garth?

I went home and had a grand time in the shop this afternoon.....blasting hubs, lapping valves, wrenching, painting parts.....I impressed myself with my own ambition! Guess I have all you guys to thank, Sunday morning b.s. sessions are a good motivator.

   Peter is a member in high regard at the British Bike club, a great guy, and as you can see, a master of fabrication, welding, and design. He built everything for this machine. He made all the fenders, indicators, primary covers, guage clusters,,,,,he manufactured almost everything.

Oh my freaking lord that is a nicely put together machine! I love this kind of motorcycle with custom fitted engine and all of the thought that goes along with producing such a machine. I someday will have time to produce a hybrid or two of my own I hope. In the meantime I support the idea that this should be written up in one of the mags.

Is Peter considering signing up with BCCMC for all of our fun and games? I would think he would be an excellent contributor to our group madness. I now have another reason to make it down in the near future to meet up with some of the members.

It was a stunned set of slack-jawed faces in the cold coffee shop parking lot yesterday morning (he must get that all the time, priceless to see from his perspective I'm sure) trying to figure out what the Sam Hill was idling towards us, all cool and calm like. Awesome but mysterious. Like a Viking ship emerging from the fog in some long ago fjord!  O.k. that's a bit dramatic but not far off. The overall impact was truly silence inducing. "WHAT the heck is that?" The Royal Enfield decal on the tank didn't really help matters, neither did the radiator shrouds protruding, winged Pegasus like, from either side of the frame. We anxiously waited for the tall, leather clad stranger to key off and dismount. It was like Clint Eastwood (the man with no name) had ridden into town and was going to avenge some past wrongs. Better hide the women, children and small animals and.....sorry, there I go again.

To say this was a treat is an understatement. The gentleman introduced himself as Peter, and this was his custom mount of 35 odd years. After introductions, which assured us we would not be smote by the lone rider, a much closer look at the bike ensued. Happily, he was much more social than Clint and comfortably joined our conversations, answering the onslaught of predictable questions. Amazing bike, and owner. The next thing that caught my eye was the rear fender/taillight housing/rear signal stalk combo....all filleted together as one piece....a truly awesome piece of workmanship. And the fork sliders. And the radiator shrouds. And the triple clamps. And the perfect front fender.....an alloy feast.

Thanks for braving the temperatures and showing us your bike, Peter. I hope to meet you again in the future, I've got lots more questions for you about your bike, and your no doubt interesting history of building and riding it.

I'd say let this be a call to arms in coming months for all the other vintage/classic bikes lurking around out there. The weather is warming, and the days are getting longer now. Come on out for some Sunday morning coffee and camaraderie.

Thanks, I was wondering if anybody would be curious to know. I'm no latin scholar, and certainly nobody has ever accused me of being a gentleman. It's the motto of a famous author I like. I found it inside the cover of one of his books, described in a short bio of him by the publisher. And he's got a little logo to go with it. Apparently he used to sign his books with this saying and sometimes a little doodle too. A coffee owed to whomever posts the's author's name  ;).

I figured it was a fitting tag, based on the caliber of the bikes I ride these days.....

i believe i seen that bike at the norton rally in lumby in july 2010. verrrry impressive! i think he siad the motor is from a europeon sports car. i don't recall which. if it wasn't there there was one realy close to that.

   Yes you should. Sunday breakfasts ar the Big 6. In the summer, there's usually 25+ bikes, of every origin and year. It's a rare day when British only bikes are outside.

Hemingway? Sorry, no cigar. Very good guess though, they were contemporaries and lived almost the exact same span of years. Both passed in the 60's.

The British MC meet up sounds like fun. I love British bikes and find their owners a most interesting lot as well. The choice for my current resto project was down to either a British or Italian bike. I found the Gootzi first, though I still think there may be a Commando in my future. I do find myself drawn to older and older bike lately as well. A rigid frame/forked British single is just a joy to look at, lithe and lightweight. Not sure about what it's like to ride though.

Hey, there's an idea! Any of you in the British Club (or our own Classic club for that matter) up for a (I'm not sure what they call them) 'test day/meet'. I've read in British bike mags that some clubs across the pond host meetings where other members are offered short sample rides (within a parking lot even for smaller bikes) on different club bikes. It enables enthusiasts to build up a repertoire of experiences on different kinds of bike configurations (singles, twins, rigids, etc.), as well as appreciations for the different eras. I know it's alot to ask to have others ride cherished possesions but there must be some ...ahem...non-show bikes or running hacks out there that owners might feel comfortable to let sample.

Stupid idea? Just a though...

Okay, I like the idea and boy have I got a variety of older bikes to sample (see below). Logistics might be a bit of a hurdle but I have ready to ride a few examples of singles/twins with shocks, plunger (coming soon) and rigid suspension. Problem is that Kamloops is certainly not a central location but then again not that many of us are "centred" anyways. The Brits have mainly Pioneer and Vintage days where they offer people a chance to ride these different machines to increase awareness, and desire, for older machines. Usually these are held as charity events and insurance costs a few bucks to cover the machines and liabilities. Yes, I might choke up on the old sphincter letting somebody ride my Paso or some of the older stuff but I am willing to share the experience (with most of you crazies anyways)

A rigid suspension is certainly a different ride and quite nice actually but after about 100 miles you are ready to get off and take a break. Back in the day the people who rode long distance on these types of machines were made of sterner stuff I am sure. Plunger suspension is better and worse in different riding conditions. Biggest challenge is for changing over in your mind the shift/brake sides with right hand shift and left hand brakes for most of these machines but you get used to it.

  Seems like a great idea, but then the more I think about it, maybe not. Hate to say it, but there are those in any club who really should not ride any kind of motorcycle, never mind someone elses strange one with shifting on the right side and upside-down, brakes on left, bad brakes, BIG effort kick start, etc. , as well as owners so cheap or un-knowledgable that they are riding around on 50 yr old tires!!!!!!!!!!!, then when one fails, and they break a leg,  they get all pissed off. There'd have to be alot of 'contracts' signed stating that crash damage would be fixed and no personal lawsuits conducted. I personally would not let anyone ride my bikes until I rode with that person to see if their skill level is up to task.

Steve. You have a point. I think the idea of a rally sounds great. Perhaps we could just have an area, where those willing and wishing to try bikes could gather. I would really enjoy meeting riders of other machines, and don't really want to step foot on someone's pride and joy. But I sure want to see it, and here about his build!

In my younger days I rode a VB Ariel 600 SV with rigid rear, it was actually quite comfortable because the seat was well sprung.
The rigid bikes don't flex as much as one with rear springs.

Tom and Jerry's restaurant is just one block west of Renfrew on Hastings St (south side, very close to the P.N.E.). I drive by it every day going to work and though I've never eaten there, my wife has and says it's good. There's also a Starbucks across the street, same block, and the Laughing Bean coffee shop (great coffee!) is one block further west. Say we meet there at T & J's the usual 9:00 a.m. for breakfast?

Hopefully John, Ted and Stan see this, as the Wired Monk will be a little lonely this Sunday.

I'll bring the truck if anyone is riding and finds anything interesting. The canopy is on the back so be good, eh.....no whole bikes!  ;D

  Yeah. I've been there before, it mostly for the 'pirates' and other pretenders. I jumped on the Norton early afternoon when it lightened up in north Surrey. It was raining in there, and rode through looking at the 'ilk', decided to save my entrance fee money.

 Good meeting new faces and going for a short ride, the warmth of spring was in the air. No heated vest needed that's for sure.
 As mentioned to you lads, I went out and harvested a great hop plant, got covered in mud, and a bunch of muddy dirt in my pannier, part of the fun of it all.

May not make it to coffee on Sunday.  It being the long weekend, Roy and I are heading over to the Island tomorrow to visit Nico.  Weather and road conditions pending, we may ride down through Port Renfrew via Cowichan Lake on Saturday.  Weather should be awesome, not sure about the road.  Maybe snow?  Certainly there will be loose gravel on the sides.  Maybe come home Saturday, maybe stay in Victoria for the night, not sure yet.

Roy and I went to Pacific and test rode a couple of brand new R1100 GS's.  Fantastic machines, Fantastic price.  $18,000 !!

Then we took a spin up to Mount Seymour.  Great ride!  No traffic on the Parkway.  Then we sat on the patio at my place with a cup of coffee and discussed our trip this summer.  Great day!

Roy is out of town this weekend.  I'll be there for a short while.  It's Sapperton Days in my community.  I want to attend the pancake breakfast and take in the festivities on East Columbia Street.  The street is closed off.  There is live music, mountain bike demonstrations, tricycle races, many vendor tables, food carts, and more.

On Sunday Roy and I went out to Chilliwak to say goodbye to our friend, Bill. He was one of those guys that you could count on, very likeable personality, always had a smile on his face, and a keen rider. Due to an unfortunate accident 2 weeks back, in Oregon, Bill lost his life, at age 60. Valley Yamaha-Moto Guzzi opened their doors for a memorial,a celebration of life, for those who knew Bill, and was well attended by many of his old coworkers, and riding buddies.  RIP my friend, the world is a better place because of you.  John.

Say hi to the red suspendered crowd and have a giant slab of BBQ salmon for me. As you already know, they're a really good bunch of eggs down there and know how to put on a welcoming event. Wish I was going along. Make sure you run up the back side of Mt. St. Helens to Windy Ridge (NF25 Road straight south out of Randle). GLORIOUS road and worthy of the name once you get all the way up to the crater viewpoint. I had a good lunch at the Big Bottom Grill in Randle the last time I was through there.

My bike and I will be ready to attend next year, FOR SURE, so warn them I'm coming.

So,... who is going to go for coffee on Sunday?  Roy and I were there by ourselves last Sunday.  We got back from our trip to California on Wednesday.  We turned back toward home about a week early.  It was too F###ing HOT!!! 107F. 

We had a FANTASTIC ride until I crashed the kz1000 between Lytton and Lillooet.  Don't really want to talk about it much.  Short story is, I was going TOO fast, and was not doing ANY of the things we learned in our course!!  The good thing is, I'm mostly OK.  My back is still quite sore.  It could have been a lot worse.  All I hit was the ditch, and not a post, or a car! 

The bike sustained some damage.  Not sure if ICBC will write it off.  My appointment is on Monday.

Thank you for welcoming June and I to the coffee meeting this morning in Coquitlam and we enjoyed the companionship and discussions.   However now almost 12 hours after the meeting I want someone to pinch me!!   Out of the misty window of the coffee shop this unique motorcycle appeared through the rain and parked outside.  I put down my coffee and said to June it appeared to be an old rotary engined bike of some sort (guess my mind just assumes something unusual must be a rotary bike)  Fortunately I believe Stan corrected me and said it was a Royal Enfield. For the next hour I stared out the window looking at the headlight and mass of aluminum and radiators thinking to myself Royal Enfield??  June and I left before the others and of course I had to stop and stare at this amazing work of art which of course had a Royal Enfield emblem on the fuel tank.  On the way home we talked about this strange machine and I am no dummy but could not recall such a machine in my memory bank.  I skipped lunch and googled immediatly,  lets see inline fours from the early 1900s, singles of a few different sizes throughout the years, and attempts at V twins.  Several pages later nothing that resembled the picture imbedded in my mind this morning.  Said to June guess we will just ask the group about the bike next week as did not want to post it on this forum in fear of looking like a rookie.  Lo and behold our website has a search box so I typed in Royal Enfield and like a magic Genie there it was!  I was not dreaming as others have seen this bike and posted pictures.   Thank you Peter and sure hope to see you again and maybe hear the bike run ( can I honk the horn)  What a machine!!!

Good to see new faces at our coffee meet, nice to meet John and June.  For more info on the engine Peter put in his bike, Google "Hillman Imp".  A mate of mine raced one back in the early 70s, very fast and a good handler, once the car has been lowered enough.  John. 

Funny you mention the Hillman Imp as I recalled the name and did a bunch of googling yesterday to refresh myself on the little gem.   Reminds me a bit of my old Skoda's ( embarrasingly I owned three of them in my past )  Some similiarities as they both had aluminum blocks although the Skodas had steel heads and a much less tuned motor than the Hillman by at least  horsepower depending on how excited the motor was at the time.   
Sure peaked my curiousity for the past two days as well as bringing back a few memories as well.
What kind of surprise will show up next Sunday for coffee?   I cant wait.

Got my 77 kz1000 finished today.  Paint cost $1K!  OUCH!  Looks great, runs well, Vance & Hines a little louder than I would like but sounds real tough.
Ordered repro body kit for my 73 Z1.  Should be shipped from Japan by the end of the month.
Z1 engine cases still in the works, hope to have them by Christmas, engine built shortly thereafter.

Absolutely coffee tomorrow. I'm assuming it will be in Coquitlam again as we did not discuss another venue.  Let's talk about that at coffee tomorrow.

Does anyone have valve spring compressor I can borrow? Or, if you can bring it to coffee tomorrow, we can remove the valves after coffee. My place is not far.

Sounds good to me.

I have a spring compressor but it may not work on your head if the springs are down into the head casting.

I already am getting  that funny look from Mrs Wheels tonight about riding there in the morning on the bikes.  We will likely hop in the horseless carriage and see you in the morniing.  I will try and sneak out for an afternoon ride on the Z1R when she runs to the grocery store,  making up the grocery list now for her!
 

Where are we having coffee this week guys?  Also, I'm ready for another shop night.  I'm not working tomorrow, so I'll finish getting the head of my Z1 ready for reassembly. 

Gord, I could use your help with reinstalling the valve springs.  How about next Thursday or Friday for a shop night?

I can highly recommend the PJ1 engine paint, at least for now.  We'll see how it stands up.  Application was really good.  Went on evenly with no drips.  Dried very quickly.  Three coats, ten minutes between each.  Looks awesome.  Now I have to grind the fins to match the original Z1.  Progress if being made.

Thursday evening sounds good. In the mean time if you haven't already done so you need to find some assembly lube, Lodco has Lucas brand or Bunaby Kawi should have some Kawi brand.

I don't know if the paint you used is too hard but I find it hard to get a factory finish on the fin ends with a grinder.

I use caborundum (black) wet dry paper on a block and sand in one direction. It gives a flatter result and the linear grain. I use a 200 grit but if that looks too fine just use a lower grit number.

I hadn't seen your post until after I had already ground off the fins.  Yes, it is difficult to obtain a smooth machined finish.  It would be easier if original cylinders and head were used, as the fins would already be flat on the edges.  Then, using a sanding block would probably work well.  My cylinders and head have never had the fins machined.  A lot of meat needs to be removed to get the pinstripes so sanding is not really an option, it would take forever.  I ended up using a pencil grinder.

Erica and I watched the 'The Descendants' yesterday (George Clooney movie, he travels to various Hawaiian islands) and it really made us want to go back. I have a buddy who rode a 650 V-Strom all over Maui a couple months back also, siad it was a blast. Have a shaved ice for me at Matsumoto's in Haleiwa (North Shore, google it). My favorite long sleeved riding T-shirt is from there. You Lucky dogs.... :)

Rob, I will try and send some pictures from here but will need Junes assistance with downsizing the pictures and putting them on this format  ( yes I too am computer challenged but can type very well)   Got the message too late to take in the shaved ice but had some prawns from the wagon on the beach there today.  Very severe winds all day on both sides of the island and Junes shoulders look like Charles Atlas from wrestling her little Sportster around in the wind all day. We have had much smoother rides down here but must say we got our excercise today wrestling the bikes even at low speeds.  I will send some pictures once I can revive her.  Extreme winds again tomorrow so heading up the volcano for a walk and no bikes tomorrow.

Ahh, the prawn trucks on the north end of the island, we did that too. Garlic laden, fresh prawns on plain rice, mmmmmmmm. Not fast food but worth the wait. And breakfast upstairs at Lulu's at the very south (?) end of the Waikiki beach main drag (across the street from the zoo). A Big Kahuna omelet every morning (pork!) and a giant mug of macadamia hinted coffee sitting at the balcony rail. We are early risers so enjoying the fragrent breeze whilst watching the locals take their morning half hour surf before heading off to work was blissfully calm before yet another busy, sightseeing day. Paradise indeed  8). I started taking pictures of all the trailers/racks/contraptions locals used to strap their surf boards to cars/bikes/carts. Amazing array of ingenious methods.

We walked from our hotel on the strip up the backside of Diamond Head, through the tunnel and on up to the lookout. It's a good hike there and back but we figured it was good penance for all the food/drink we consumed. I think there and back took us about 3 hours. Nice to walk through the residential neighborhoods and see how the host native Hawaiians live.

p.s. Don't consume the packaged, dried mango found on every corner ABC like I did. That stuff is my kryptonite. No imagination required to envision the result. But mmmm so good....worth it!

Okay see you on Sunday.     My experience with a properly installed helicoil is they are stronger than the aluminum threading that they replace so you can look on the bright side with that aspect.

One of the threads is pretty messed up but I might be able to salvage one or two of them by re- tapping.
Does anyone have a M14X1.25 tap for the spark plug hole? My kit has M14X1.5 only.
I checked out Timeserts and they look like a better option than the Helicoil for spark plug holes, (and Drain Plugs)
If I buy the kit and and a 15mm insert pack, they come with 10 inserts so I'll do all 4 while I'm at it.

Taps are for cutting threads in new metal, they will remove material and make a bad situation worse.

The one I linked is specific to spark plug holes but may not be in the size for your bike. You can usually buy a full set of metric or SAE units from 8mm to 18mm or 1/4 - 11/16.

These will restore the thread without removing material, they work by re-forming the thread rather than cutting it.

We use them at work a lot and they work great.

How about Bruce's Country Market in Maple Ridge, it's right at Lougheed Hwy & 240th (across from the old Albion ferry dock on the north side). It's always been a good 'heading out' breakfast destination for Erica and I when we ride out Dewdney Trunk on bikes. Their homecut bacon strips keep us coming back.

If that's too far out I'm game to meet up anyplace. Someplace else new? We used to frequent assorted golf course club houses for a breakfast ride but fewer of them are serving proper breakfasts anymore. Golden Eagle used to be a great spot (on the way to Pitt Lake, Pitt Meadows). Never had a problem being served/accommodated (able to park the bikes out front, in sight) anywhere we went if you keep the exhaust note very low idling in & leaving and express a pleasant attitude to staff. Golf courses like to maintain their serenity  8).

Sounds good to me, I'm always up for new food experiences!

Bruce's is ok by me, I used to go there quite reguarlly, great place for fresh bread or smoked Salmon.

Rob that sounds like a good idea!    Even I should be able to make it from 221st to 240th by 900am prairie time.

Weather was fantastic.  Took the Z1 out and thrashed her.  Sounds awesome!!  The induction noise from the air box really howls.  Did lots of high rpm stuff.

We stopped at Kiwi Canuck's (David) place.  I'm really envious of his shop spaces, but not his property taxes.  He gave us the tour of his GS that he got from Quebec.  The fellow he bought it from lied, lied, lied!!  It will be a fantastic bike when it's finished though.

After that, Shawn took Roy and I for ride around the Ft Langley/Langley area.

All in all a great day.

Beautiful day out for breakfast at a seemingly popular bike haunt near Aldergrove. Nice jumping off point for a day ride. Weather fine if cool.  Ross debuted his pride and joy, as did Shawn his latest project. Dave hosted a casual garage tour after at his home nearby. Soon we'll be knee deep in GS1000s ! You guys are putting me to shame, I'll have the insurance on in a couple weeks I promise. I did do some preseason readiness on my, and Miss Erica's, rides yesterday afternoon; filters, oil , plugs and such. Won't be long for summer now!

I plan on taking a lot more pictures this season, we were kinda thin last year. I'd like to get some decent picture of our riders as well, so all can place names to faces. Maybe some kind of semi formal posing sometime in a picturesque location, with new projects unveiled or the old standard favorite steeds ? Stan has already tapped me to do some descriptive post ride writeups for any daytrips we take as a group this summer. It'll fall to other more adventurous souls to make some memorable moments happen, just nothing tragic please  ;). I'll have to dust off the dictionary and thesaurus I guess, and I'll have to figure out how to use the new camera.

There was a clutch of Triumphs in the cafe parking lot; a very clean black Speedmaster, a newish Tiger 800 and a very cute old 250 trailie in mint shape but they left before I could snap a pic. I'll do a better job of representing a broader range of bikes if others show for breakie! John, wheres that 'new' boxer?

Stan,  if it makes you feel any better your Indian is one of the very few bikes I would ever consider selling my Kawasaki for!  We will have another Honda in the mix soon to even the crowd a bit once Mrs Wheels gets out and rolling on Sundays.  That time change last week has affected her more than myself so we should see her in mid May at the coffee meetings.

I have a confession to make, then I'm going to delete this post after a day and deny it ever existed.
I had a couple of Kawasaki dirt bikes, a KX 125 and a KDX 200 and I loved them. They were reliable, handled extremely and were very competitive with the other brands. I dont think I ever went home without a trophy when I raced them.

Admitting you have a problem is the first step.

Bear says he may be in Burnaby on Sunday and would like to attend our coffee get together.  So I'm suggesting Vibrato in Coquitlam as a location.

Unlike the RRSP's I've invested in, a Commando purchased for the right price will likely increase in value every year and....... have you ever tried to ride an RRSP?

My wife used to shake her head when I referred to my cars as the "redneck stock market" Then I started selling them to put the house down payment together.

So far, antiques and car have been the best investments I've made.

Let's meet at the Hilltop Cafe in Langley, 240th & Fraser hwy.  BUT!!!! Let's say 8:00 AM.  Then we can do a ride, maybe to Squamish (suggestions?) and be home for lunch or shortly thereafter.  There are many options for those who wish a longer ride, i.e. up to Cypress and/or Mt. Seymour.  Mt. Seymour is one of my favourite local rides.

June and I will probably get the bikes out Sunday for a ride but need to be back in Pitt Meadows for a family dinner.
800 am on a Sunday would probably to early for our fragile lifestyle and dont want June to freeze as her metabolism is not the same as ours.   We are up for a ride but may have to play catch up or join another week so dont wait for us.  Monday is not an option for either of us and Saturday is bicyle day plus have to watch the bidding on that Norton on ebay just in case we have to jump in.
Boy o boy can we be difficult or what??

Shawn, Nico, Roy, and I went for a long ride today down into Washington today.  Long day.  Roy and I left my place at 6:45AM to meet Shawn and Nico in Abbotsford at 7:30.  We rode down to Annacortes and had lunch.  Had a really neat ride around the peninsula there.  Then out to Concrete, Sedro Wooley, and had another late lunch near Acme.  Crossed the border and had coffee in Abbotsford.  Nico headed home from there.  Shawn peeled off at 200th while Roy and I continued home to New West.  Roy and I didn't get home until 8:15PM.  Quite a long day.

Apparently my wife made dinner plans for us on Saturday and Sunday.  So given the long ride we had today and the social obligations, I'm not up to a long ride on Sunday.  I'll be at the Hilltop for coffee at 9:00.  If someone suggests a short ride from there I might be up for it, but that will be a game day decision.

Is the Hilltop OK, or is there somewhere else anyone would prefer?

As much as I would love a trip to Indian-Princessmish (have to be politically correct nowadays), I don't really want to deal with all the stress of getting form Coquitlam to North Van. I did that drive today in a truck and people were trying to kill me.

I'll second John's suggestion. Chilliwack airport has awesome pie.

Early Sunday AM up to Squeemish is fine, and I love the ride up to Cypress and especially up to Mt Seymour.  But I agree the bits on the freeway suck.  I will say though, the ride up to Mt Seymour is my favourite in the Lower Mainland.

Having said that, just a coffee this Sunday is not enough for me.  I'd like a good ride that gets me home around 2 or 3 PM.

I'm up for the ride, Hill Top opens at 8AM so how about we ride out at 8:30AM, so anyone who wants to grab a bite can get there at 8 and be ready to roll by 8:30.

How long is the ride as in distance and time as I need to be back in Langley by 2PM.

How long?  Depends.  But if we plan it right, you can easily be back by 2:00.  Others can ride more in the States, or we can all head back together, then ride more in Canada.  My preference is to stick together.

We can discuss it as a group tomorrow.

Does anyone plan to bring a tool kit?

At the moment my kz1000 has no brakes, so I'll be riding the z1 which has no luggage capability.  If someone else is bringing a tool kit, I'll leave mine at home so as not to have a large weight in my day pack.

I'm bringing a thermos and snacks for when we get up to Baker.

Ha, that's like being a passenger behind a very tall rider.....well done video, tho', good music, clear images, looks like a great ride was had.....

Enjoyed the video.  Sure lush green landscape, not like the semi-desert I'm used to riding in around the Interior.  Agree with the others that the music was a good choice, but the camera could have been either higher or mounted further forward, perhaps on a handlebar mount, on the front fork, front fender, etc.  That way you could see more of the other riders, and eliminate video evidence of any 'ahem".....speed indiscretions.

Nico and I stopped half way thru the ride.  I'd felt a few "chunks" thru the foot pegs and decided to stop and check it out.  Good thing I did.  Hd lost the clip and outer link link from the drive chain master link.  The main part of the master link was starting to bend.  This slightly wider space in the link was causing the "chunk" when it didn't quite mesh with the sprockets.  Called my wife and she was kind enough to bring out another master link.

Got home OK.  Only one person (even among many bikers) stopped to ask if we need help.  He was riding a Harley.  Nico asked him, "since you're riding a Harley, do you happen to have any tie-wire?"  He just said "No", and rode off.  I guess he didn't appreciate Nico's sense of humour.

A little dab of silicon over a cleaned up master link and clip will stop the clip from going AWOL.   I've lost the clips a few time before (and yes, they were correctly installed) but never since using some silicon to secure.

I have an assisted Women thing button on my bike that usually works when no one is around,  bike is pretty shy in crowds and at stop lights so have to use the kick to bring her back to life,  so does that qualify me as a half man or should I continue to look at Stan as some sort of a man idol??

If anyone likes interesting cars and not the usual fleet of Camaros, Novas and Mustangs that drag out to the Langley cruise-in, there is a good show in North Van this weekend.

The French and Italian car show happens near Lonsdale tomorrow.

I've gone a couple times over the years and it is a really well-done show.

You get a few of the usual self-indulgent douchebags with the brand-new Ferraris but not many. Mostly it's really nice, vintage Ferraris, Lamborghinis etc with lots of Alfas and Fiats thrown in. The French cars are usually very nice as well, the usual 2CVs show up but you get a couple Citroen DS and SMs and a couple vintage Renault Gordinis show up as well.

I'm in Buffalo this week, Denver next Friday where I pick up a bike to ride home, so I won't see you until next month.

Roy, Roy, Roy, your wife goes to New Zealand for a month, leaving you to fend for yourself and there you are.... in trouble with the law and on your way to pick up another bike too, most likely another beautiful Italian.  I'm more than a little bit jealous.
This is a classic example of why men need constant supervision. ;D

I should have taken to my scrapers, that would have made it interesting, 60+ yeqr old guy outrunning a young cop  ;D
The trouble is there were two other cops on the scene all lights ablaze as well.
 

Anyway they soon lost interest in a boring old white guy.

You'd get off scot free, no young cop would ever admit to that.

Got back from Alberta today.  2000 miles on the kz1000.  Other than almost 2 litres of oil usage, she ran like a top.  Avg 50 miles per Imperial gallon.  Usually cruzzin at 65-70 mph.

Will have to pass this week as have some golf commitments on Sunday.     By the way I need to thank the two Norton owners ( cannot recall their names) who shared some time, thoughts and a bit of tinkering with me last Sunday morning as the bike is running tremendous now and I don't want to shut it off. I know those two fellas read this site often and thank you to both and hope to see you at future coffee meetings.  Speaking of not wanting to shut the bike off.....  I always let my bike cool off for a while before parking it in the garage.  Decided to walk upstairs and pour a glass of wine and sit on the patio while she cooled off.  Fired up this website which as usual put me to sleep. This is when the Prince of Darkness slipped in and took control of the situation.  After being roused awake by a giant lick in the face by my tiny dog looking for a meal I went out to park the bike.

The headlight was on.....   Next step turn the ignition off as I must have left the key in and ignition on.  The ignition key was on the workbench and ignition was off hmmm.   Thinking the Norton was like my computers at home and work I smartly remembered those voices in my ear from my children saying Dad try rebooting the thing and it will work again.    Put the key in the Norton turned it on and pushed to go button... made a clicking noise like a bunch of pressurized gas going through a very tiny orifice. 

Okay battery dead no problem I have one of those kick start lever things,  one kick and pop and smoke out the carbs so I know it has life in it.  Second kick and she fires and runs perfect. Turned it off and the headlight went out as it should.   Looks like the backfire on the first kick scared off the Prince of Darkness and the curse has been removed.

So lets see I have had the bike since April,  ran outta fuel twice ( never before in any machine in 53 years),  covered the bike once in oil from slightly overfilling ( couple ounces of oil can go for miles on a bike and it mostly gravitates to the tires to mate with its rubber siblings)  Had the headlight either turn itself on for a few hours killing the battery,  had a mirror vibrate off the handlebar while riding only to snag it in the air and stuff it in my jacket before it obliterated itself on the highway and flattened somebody riding on a Whizzer on the shoulder of the road at 20 miles per hour. To top it off the kind gentleman at the gas station that came over and was obviously impressed by my British beauty and said " didn't they stop makin' those things"
Guess the bike is a keeper as it is much too needy to let someone else have it,  might have to get rid of the other bikes now and put all attention to the needy one.

How about a quick coffee rendezvous at Vibratos in Coquitlam (give Garth a chance to show  ;D),everyone should now know where that is, and then we ride to Howe Sound Brewpub in Squamish for an early lunch/brunch (not sure when they open)? Or breakfast at the '99' in Britannia Beach (is it still there?). After that it's maybe a small backroad run up through Brackendale, and then....home?

But I'm good with any consensus  8).

Wow, that was some down pour, just insane amount of rain in the last 20 minutes.

See you tomorrow,  looks like a second storm coming through Sunday so more of the same heavy rains.    Looks like the garage is going to see a lot more time once again;  its that time of the year.  Time to move a bike out and get something new in the garage I think.

I am afraid my bicycle riding is limited to days with temperatures that are no less than 85 degrees and must involve passing thru vineyards, wineries, golf courses and the odd licensed lemonade stand for rehydration purposes.  My days of riding my bicycle for an hour and a half each way to work and back are long gone and all that's left is the fact that my three adult children still cannot keep up with dad on a bicycle when he has a strong wind at the rear of him  ( and there is no shortage of that these days)   I will be taking my little VW diesel to coffee in the morning with the heater on and the music blaring and a smile on my face knowing my little car gets better gas mileage than any of the bikes in our small stable here.
No pies tomorrow for me thank you.

A 1930 Southbend 9A 9"x32"

It's old and slow but some lathe is better than no lathe.

If I have anything big to do, I just bring it to work.

My Southbend 9 sits in the corner most of the time.... Its not slow, just not powerful.. And only one feed..no quickchange.. Be great for my daughter to play with.. They sure build some cool stuff for them .. Hawkeye has a Hercus 9.... He brought his new backplate. To coffee on Saturday..

I learned on a Hercus 9.

It's a good lathe and I like it a lot but the lack of a power crossfeed and q/c gearbox is a bit frustrating. Mine is thebare bones unit, not even a clutch, just half-nuts.

It's good enough for the bit of turning I do at home. I'm just a rough turner anyway. I've got a really good machinist I use if I need critical tolerance stuff made, he's a CNC programmer too so if I make one, I usually make a whole bunch and sell them.

I'm heading over to a fellows house this evening who has a shop where he specializes in restoring British bikes ( I think, not sure yet ). I think he also provides custom fabrication services, as well as helping sort out problems for clients bikes. Should be interesting. In the middle of the bald ass prairie. Who knew?

Ross I  will step in here.    The wuuses were myself, David,Rob, John and Allan who were all warm and comfortable.  I am told Stan wanted to drive his car the one block to the restaurant but was encouraged by Shawn to do the 10 minute starting routine for the Indian the 3 minute ride to Porters.  Riders were Stan, Shawn, Roy, Peter, and Nico with his magnificent handling Goldwing.  Nico were you trying to turn on the radio, wave at us through the rear view mirror and removing your stuck boot from the shifter at the same time that car was approaching from the rear or was that a skilled maneuver that you have practiced several times.  Ross have you seen those taillights on Roys V11,  those are way too cool and look like the taillights on a 59 caddie.  Conversations at the table were varied and several subjects were talked about including you of course when the ham and bacon arrived.   David bailed me out and brought one of his carbs from the Suzuki for show and tell.   All polished up using simple green, autosol and a clean and dirty set of buffers. ( hope it was Simple Green David)
There is talk about us heading up the sunshine coast next Sunday for a ride as weather forecast is good so look forward to a post from Stan on that.

That about sums up what you missed yesterday morning,  unfortunately my fog filter on my camera phone limited the pictures to none.

Ross, in the spirit of show and tell I brought along one of my VM34 carbs from the Boise Beauty GS1000S, as I had rebuilt them with new orings and polished up the tops and bottoms.
Yes I used Simple Green to clean them before dipping in Berryman's then used the buffing machine with the white compound and then Autosol for the brass bits and cleaning up the left overs from the buffing.

As it turns out, I don't think we'll get as much snow as forecast. At my brother's place 16 km out of town we have about 3cm of snow. In town there is almost none. The roads are all sheer black ice with some blowing snow. I'm certain it gets much worse as you go West.

It's beginning to look like I'll be here much longer than I had thought when I arrived. I may have to buy snow tyres

Ok guys, I've managed to get us a tour of a private car collection in Aldergrove B.C.

This will be the first Sunday in November, that would be Sunday the third.

They're calling for rain on Sunday so I figured a nice inside diversion would work well.

He would like us to be there early so I booked it for 9:00am and figured we could go for coffee afterwards, Hilltop Cafe is close by.

This is a PRIVATE collection and I would like to respect that so if you wish to attend, please send me a PM and I will give you the address and the details.

Gerry,    I am afraid the closest thing I have ridden to that thing is a Road King.  Have ridden a few Harleys during our Hawaiin vacations including some I could hardly hold up in the wind at a stoplight with my long skinny legs.   I find Harleys are a good exercise for me and at the end of the day I end up with new muscles in my arms, wrists, shoulders and sore knees.  I would guess that the one from the museum would have its own personality and may require a bit more adjusting and tweaking on each ride so may take quite a bit more skill to keep on the road.
I have one question for you that I could probably just google;   what is Hydra Glide?    I am guessing it makes the bike feel like it is riding on water but not sure whats in the name?

Hydra glide Is the fork that was introduced on the big twin H-D models in 1949.
Later in 58 they introduced rear shocks on the big twins, and they became Duo-Glides.
In 65 they introduced electric start on the big twins and hey became Electra Glides.

   The introduction of the "hydraulic" front end meant "Hyrda" Glide, the transition from "rigid"  frame to "swingarm" and shock absorbers ( that really only worked "visually" on early HD's ) transformed the model to the "Duo" Glide, keeping in mind that the front end was also "Glide" as in physically HUGE, with the forks wide enough apart to accommodate an appropriate fender.     

   You have riddin Harley's Johny, but I don't suspect that you've ever riddin a real one.       ...pre 1985.

  You write about adjusting and tweaking, however you really don't know until you ride a motorcycle as to if it "fits" or not. Kirt, the Pan Man, is quite the rider, and as such, rides his "Duo-Glide" as assertively ( or aggressively ) as he chooses. He is a blast to ride with, as is Doctor Virago, and I reckon that the both of us olde Harley riders, probly wear out the outsides of our running boards near as frequently as our tires.   ...the Doc wears out the heels of his boots.     ...no kidding.

   If you aint got skill for ridin, luckily, it can be acquired, and practiced, with friend, and/or cuzzin accompaniment.

Makes sense and now they have the Ultra Glide so just a simple progression along the way in engineering and identification.

Makes me ask another question,  is there someone that builds a crankshaft for those things that will make them fire properly and ease on the busted bearings, rods and bottom end stuff? I heard the Germans had a solution to make those motors run a bit more balanced and have longevity  so it would be a marketing bonanza for the buyers.
They would also be smoother to ride one would think.

Problem is the bikes might not end up back in the shops so that's not good for the dealer.

   If you'd be hip to it, perhaps we could plan an overnighter together at one of our fave hotsprings during your visitation. My girl and I have one in particular that we frequent at every opportunity.   ...hey, maybe the good Doctor will join us ?   ...and maybe the Pan Man will be riding out to visit his folks around that time ?    ...Aaron might be happy with how his Norton is tuned..   ...hell maybe even Mr. 754 will be riding his 750 four ?...      ...Henry might need a break from the big city too and ride his steed over and leave an oil stain that I'll get the blame for..   ...and maybe Peg will be present to be charming and colourful and take the pressure off of the rest of us..    ...and what about the Quaker Oats lookin guy ?...    ...and Ken ?..   ...maybe he'll ride his Dragon bike..

  Good simple description of the "glides" Gerry. There is one Glide not mentioned from the short history lesson Gerry gave ( I am referring to pre EVO motor "Glides) that is the Super Glides, these are what I was most personally familiar with. That was the 74 cu in (1200cc) engine in a sportster style frame with a step seat and a one piece tank, the first few years had a tailpiece behind the seat instead of a rear fender. The first ones were FX model designation, and were originally called the "night train", introduced as I recall in 71 or 72. Willie G Davidson came up with the idea , the front end was the wide front off the duo glide. The bike was very similar to other bikes to ride where as the Classic full size Harleys were a very different bike (as Gerry mentioned) to ride.
 The significance of the super glide was that it was Willie G's first stab at changing the Harley look, first step into a factory "custom", and was the start of all the overwhelming number of models that had all those letters for model designations. The first couple years with the "boat tail" rear end did not go over well and sales were low, and the 1976 "American Bicentennial " had a painted tank that almost looked like a comic strip. They changed the rear end, added electric start, and came out with the Wide Glide in the 70's and sales just skyrocketed.
 The early to mid 70's Superglides really were Willie G's brainchild and made Harley into a contender in the sales numbers. They were a Harley that us young guys (young at that time) could really identify with.
 How ever the real Classic Harley look is the Hydra, Duo, Electra Glides like Gerry's bike. They are the classic "American" motorcycle. The Superglide was a concept that the Japanese manufacturers jumped on board with and called them specials ,cruisers and a hundred other names but Willie G started that trend with the Super Glides. This is my recollection and I stand to be corrected.

Wide glide was not used on Superglide, they used Sportster fork ,then Kayabasingle disc, then dualdisc Showa fork.
 We also missed Dyna Glide ,and. Cow Glide, there is probably more we missed.

   My "first" Harley was a 76 Superglide.

   ...I often referred to it as a "Stupidglide", and changed pretty much everything about it in the time that I had it.

   ....unconscious block in my mind or sumthin..

   ....I don't remember a whole lot of that time in my life...

 The amazing thing is that I  remember any thing from that time period. I really thought a Night Train would be my first Harley, but I rode a lot of my friends "superglides" and just didn't fall in love. I came so close to buying the Bicentennial edition in "76" but dad convinced my to buy a bunch of range cattle instead (I was on the farm then) and that was a wise choice , or on the years I made money off them it was. And the cows did have a leather seat, and horns, and they made gas rather than burning it so I got the cows instead. Who knows how things go.

The wide glide was pre EVO though, I think, and I was really referring to the FX and FXE with out getting into all the models and variations after the FXE. I remember friends getting the Wide Glides and the Fat bobs but the FX and FXE were the start of that whole style and the factory custom trend. The interesting thing is that the custom bike builders were really annoyed at Harley for doing that and taking away their business (for a short time until guys like Gerry realized they still wanted to customize the superglides) .

   ....I hated the "boat tail" fender deal Mervin...

   The 70's were totally the "let's modify from new" years...


    Now, just to clarify..   during the "Panhead" era, we experienced the Hydra Glide, the Duo Glide, and in it's last year of existence, the Electra Glide.     ...which was awesome on account of it being electric and kick at the same time. 

   The Shovelhead era brought it's own morphism with going to an alternator from a generator and changing the bottom end look for the next few decades, the introduction of the "bat wing" fairing in 1969 which continues to this day, the FLT "Tour Glide"  ...forgot about that two headlighted rubber mounted five speed couch with the backward triple tree deal, and much much more.
  Many really cool models like Merv touched on, like the Wide Glide, the Factory Custom Wide Glide, The Low Rider, The Sturgis with it's belt drive primary, and many others.

   Much due to Willy G's vision, name, and character.

   God bless him for continuing his Family legacy with his own, very personal, vision.

Bill has a point......never had an interest in tattoos, so I have not checked out how many HD tattoos are actually on HD riders......maybe most of the art depicts things that have nothing to do with actual brands.....comments from those closer to tattoos?

Does HD culture include tattoo culture (TC), with no bike affiliation or use, or is TC an urban thing? 

Tattoos are an urban thing now.

It's wierd, tattoos on a guy from my grandfather's generation usually meant they were a veteran.

Tattoos on a guy from my father's generation usually meant they were a badass at one time or another (or in my father's case, make bad decisions. The only name you get tattooed is yours or "mom")

Tattoos on my generation simply mean "look at me, I'm complex and moody".

The last movie I saw, Will Farrells character was a discount mattress salesman who had a tattoo of arabic writing on his neck that apparently translated to "make good decisions" That sums up the tattoo thing for my generation right there.

I really don't get the piercing thing. Why would you want to look like you fell face-first into a tackle box?

I have a plan. I don't have any tattoos or piercings. When all of my generation's kids are used to their parents and their parents friends having tattoos, they'll look a me an think: "that guy has no tattoos, he's probably a psychopath or something!"  ;D

 When I was young it was the sailors (Navy sailors) that got tattoos.
 I don't Get tattoos because my grandfather always said not to because you can always be identified. He probably was thinking of Hitler tattooing the Jews and the big fear of communism and the communist purges in the USSR. However it did seem like a good idea to me to not have identifying markings.
 I remember when people hated us when I was young, and I mean HATED us because we had long hair, so I don't criticize the latest trends in personal looks. Bob Dylan sang that after the guys in the bar finished beating up the guy with blue hair they figured out that he was just a Guy, who had blue hair.

   My very first tattoo had nothing to do with motorcycles, or the lifestyle, it was, and is, art to me.   ...and it is my connection to my Father who is now passed and acquired his tattoo in a whole nuther country, and on a whole nuther continent where he was born.

   All of my tattoo's are art and have meaning to me..

   I could use an old Haley Davidson rider saying here, however, instead, I will paraphrase my old buddy Walt..

Hey Ross, hope all is o.k. with you. We miss you too, only John left here to defend Kawasaki honor. I'll take a stab at profiling my end of the table.

The turnout was about 10 at the Hilltop, seated at our usual back table. It was the usual band of monkeys with 2 new guests. Sixtogo was in town from Vernon (?) so he found his way out to break bread with the Valley boys. Always good to see him. And Mervin rolled up on the most outrageous sidecar rig any of us have seen in quite some time. A big Cavalcade with a two place chair big enough for your mother-in-law. Sorry, no pics, but trust me....she was a lulu. Shawn and Roy defended our honor as a bike club, the rest of us caged it.

After a full breakfast, and a belly full of banter, it was suggested by someone  ;) that we all needed to see Shawn's progress on his turbo project so 5 or 6 of us followed him to his shop and were suitably impressed. Should be a riot when running. After that all departed to enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend.

Works for me although I do enjoy the ride out the new South Frazer Perimeter road aka 17.
I have noticed a radar stop set up just this side of the new Port Mann a couple of times.
They like to sit just on the Surrey side of the peculiar bridge also, ask me how I know ???

Roy,   the cops are there all day and all night long on that stretch of 4 lane divided road writing tickets.    I have looked high and low around there for a donut shop and seemingly cannot find one, so I am not sure what the attraction is for them there.  I could be just one rogue cop who hates the public and just never clocks out and stays under the bridge with his radar all day long sorta like a troll

Its not about safety as its wider and longer than Mission Dragstrip so quite capable of 300 miles per hour one would think?

Yes, while I was stopped getting taxed a minivan got pulled up.
The cop wrote out a ticket for the driver then walked around the other side and gave a ticket to the guys wife for no seat belt.
It's strictly revenue gathering just like the ones on Columbia near the skytrain bridge, the speed limit there is only 30 kph

Yup ... and about 6 blocks up the hill the drug peddlers on bicycles, hookers and the deadbeats selling the stuff they stole from peoples cars and garages last night are roaming the streets  free and unmolested.  ???

I can't blame the cops, really.

Drug dealer carry guns nowadays, if I were a cop, I'd hand out tickets any chance I got.

I guess my understanding is way off,  I thought their philosophy was to serve and protect? 

Serve who and protect who seems to be their biggest issue from what I see.   Whilst the cops are out running over, shooting, tazering people while making drug deals to protect us under their contract as Cuzzin suggests is beyond me. They surely are not robots are they?    At least the firefighters and paramedics are there to serve and protect us and I have nothing but high respect for how they help us through our difficult moments.

Cops just create difficult moments from my perspective and they have not gained my respect regionally and cannot vouch for elsewhere.   They should use their best judgment when enforcing laws and that seems to be a lost art in British Columbia.

Common sense and good judgement have gone out the window nowadays, on both sides of the law.

When my buddies and I were being hooligans, around highschool age, we got a lot of "you boys need to go home now" from officer friendly but never anything serious.

If I were the same age, doing the same stupid stuff now, I'd probably have a record.

Lorne passed away last night ( the 20th) @ about 12:30 AM. He'd had a very bad previous night and day, extreme pain that could not be controlled. I am saddened, relieved, angry, depressed, happy, confused, numbed. The funeral is Monday.

I may be back for coffee on Sunday, for sure the next one. I've missed home so much.
