I made one of those once, found it was very expensive to maintain and required constant supervision. It worked well for a few years, then became increasingly reluctant to respond to my commands. After I'd had it for about 15 years I found it was so much easier to just open the damn door myself that I quit beeping at out loud and just beeped under my breath in flustration .....  A few of my friends have had similar experiences with the ones they made.

My Dad went through a few,...they kept burn'n out.

I was on my way home from coffee today in K-town and met up with a guy from ontario here for the weekend. His brother in kelowna said to him, take my bike out for a ride and do the loop around westside road and back on 97. He was riding a 1986? This has nothing to do with bikes,but very few videos really blow me away and this one does! Keep in mind this is a Russian aircraft that's been around since 1996. It incorporates vector thrusting and from what I'm to understand the other American manufactures are just started to use this within the last couple of years. The SU30 Video is cool, I spent 11 years in the Royal Canadian Artillery and the last four of those in the Air Defense.  I have seen many of the maneuvers that that pilot is executing.  The one where the aircraft ends up flying tail first is called the "Cobra" maneuver.  No NATO aircraft can do it as their engines would flame out.  The cobra looks cool at an airshow but if a pilot did that during ACM (Air Combat Maneuvers ) he would place himself in a low energy low speed condition and would basically die very shortly thereafter. 
The vectored thrust technology has been around for awhile in aircraft like the AV8B Harrier and the F22 RAPTOR and the V22 OSPREY.  However I am sure that the SU30 is almost as much fun to ride as a Ducati Multistratta which is not so hard on fuel.

I used to ride x-country events on that terrain. We went as fast as we possibly could for three to five hours hours, didn't crash entering the creeks, didn't stop for movie shoots and had bikes with six to eight inches of front suspension travel.

That's wild eh, I have a square hole drill set-up for wood, but that's trick metal stuff. The tool won't break unless you forget to tighten the vise. For alum. it's going kinda slow, so the machine doesn't burn out. It's all in the head of the mill.

Pegdrag, I think Canada is starting to wake up to this issue and is more than willing to get back to basics.  The tech priority has been placed on information sharing for a while now but you should see a trend back to making money with your hands.  You won't become a millionare but you'll have a great life and provide for your family.  Once people figure out that rich doesn't mean money she'll come back around.  Keep in mind the computer hasn't been around for that long and it's still a new toy to humans.  Once we get boared of it we'll look for something else to keep us busy. ;)

The process is the usual 'highlight address' in the explorer window where you found the video, right click on the highlight area and 'copy' then go to BCCMC post and right click to select 'paste'. Sometimes explorer gets a little uppity and you have to have your post window and the video window open at the same time, under different tabs of course. Let us know how it goes by posting us with your favourite video. Keep in mind that not all YouTube video links can be copied but that is very rare that somebody blocks their video as they want it to be seen don't they?

Ahhhh, my wet-dream vacation destination, TT week (or Manx GP Races) on the isle of Man. Open race days on the Mountain Course so many motorcycles of such a variety it puts things like Daytona or Sturgis on par with tiddly-wink competitions (in my humble opinion, and I don't care about any others thanks). Yep, something like the NW200 would be nice too. A buddy of mine a few years ago took a trip to the TT then on to the Irish Tourist Trials for a week of town to town following the competition (more like pub to pub it sounded like) then took off for the ISDT in Scotland. Now that is my kind of passion.

Hold on there fellas!!!  It has always tickled my fancy to attend the TT in June on the Isle of Man.  Over the past couple of years my wife and I have mentioned it in our discussions a little more often so it just might become reality sometime down the road.  Who knows?!?

          for classic bike guys like on this forum, the Manx  Grand Prix would probably be favourite, they have "classic" races for the older bikes and lots of different events based around  the older bikes. plenty to see and do for the fortnight. I raced there in 1970 and 1971 when they used to get more entries than they could cope with (they restricted them to 120 per class then) now, due to the horrendous cost involved they struggle to get 50 entries per class. A sign of the times I'm afraid, but still a great weeks racing, preceded by the weeks practice of course.  I well remember the "joy" of starting practice on the circuit at 06.00 in the morning and listening to them telling to watch out for rain and mist on the mountain. Great fun !!
                                                                                The TT is based around more modern bikes and due to the dates (June) is busier, due to the holiday aspect. The North West is also a good weekend (I go there every year) and the races are all on the one day (Saturday) so you do not need to use up your holiday allowances to visit, a long weekend suffices, and you are made very welcome by the Irish.
                                                                                               If any of you are seriously thinking about going let me know and if  i can help you in any way I will.

All electrical components and wiring harnesses depend on proper circuit functioning, which is the transmission of charged ions by retention of the visible spectral manifestation known as "smoke." Smoke is the thing that makes electrical circuits work. Don't be fooled by scientists and engineerstalking about excited electrons and the like. Smoke is the key to all things electrical.
 
We know this to be true because every time one lets the smoke out of an electrical circuit, it stops working. This can be verified repeatedly through empirical testing. For example, if one places a large copper bar across the terminals of a battery, prodigious quantities of smoke are liberated and the battery shortly ceases to function. In addition, if one observes smokeescaping from an electrical component such as a Lucas voltage regulator, it will also be observed that the component no longer functions.
 
The logic is elementary and inescapable! The function of the wiring harness is to conduct the smoke from one device to another. When the wiring harness springs a leak and lets all the smoke out of the system, nothing works right afterward.
 
Starter motors were considered unsuitable for British motorcycles for some time largely because they regularly released large quantities of smoke from the electrical system.
 
It has been reported that Lucas electrical components are possibly more prone to electrical leakage than their Bosch, Japanese or American counterparts. Expertspoint out that this is because Lucas is British, and all things British leak. British engines leak oil, British shock absorbers, hydraulic forks, and diskbrake systems leak fluid, British tires leak air and British Intelligence leaks national defense secrets.
 
Therefore, it follows that British electrical systems must leak smoke. Once again, the logic is clear and inescapable.
 
Sometimes you may miss the component releasing the smoke that makes your electrical system function correctly, but if you sniff around you can often find the faulty component by the undeniable and telltale smoke smell. Sometimes this is a better indicator than standard electrical tests performed with a volt-ohm meter.
 
In conclusion, the basic concept of transmission of electrical energy in the form of smoke provides a clear and logical explanation of the mysteries ofelectrical components and why they fail.

I learned a long time ago that once you let the "Factory Smoke" out of any electrical device, it is next to impossible to replenish........

They actually taught us that theory at electrical trade school in Kamloops.

Sometimes an electrical component has a slow leak. When only part of the smoke escapes, it will still sort of work, but the leak has started. Eventually, the rest of the smoke will leak out and the thing will fail completely.

I remember leaving vocational school with the "Theory Of Electricity" burned into my brain cells. Forty years of solving electrical and mechanical problems has convinced me there definitely is a difference between theory and reality and the reality in regards to electricity is, as Bofud posted, "ELECTRICITY IS SMOKE"
 Something I can't quite figure out though is ...... how do they get the smoke in there in the first place???
Any ideas?

It is accomplished by rolling a "Big Fatty", lighting it and injecting the smoke into the battery upon exhalation.  There are obviously quite a few expert technicians that are or have previously worked in the industry.

Gee I wonder why people don't trust the government.  The obvious "damn we're busted reaction" from the BC Hydro guys speaks volumes.  OK this is not strictly speaking a bike video but riders have power meters too.

Ward, this issue has me thinking a lot, also......my concern with it involves privacy, rather than RF ((we already have cell phones, wifi, etc.).  I've been intending to just say "no, thank you" until I can be assured that my power use patterns will not become part of a data base. 

Our water meters must be read one at a time by a drive-by.  Surely a smart meter can be monitored the same way.

And not just privacy. In places like Ontario, where they've had smart meters for some time, billing went up by a huge amount. They can say, "Oh, you used that electron at a peak time. That's going to cost you more."

So far, Fortis just has a monthly limit for residential. (16,000 kwh, I think.) Anything over that is at a higher rate. They did recently announce that they got approval for smart meters. "What? Everybody else is doing it."

So how do we stop them?  I send BC Hydro an email every couple of weeks that simply reads "You will not install a smart meter at my address. Thank you."  I don't imagine that it will stop them in the end but what else is a guy to do?

Just say "no, thank you" when they contact you to set up a time to switch the meter....be firm, polite, etc.   

my understanding is if you are not home when they show up they just go ahead an install it.

Install a doglar alarm at the meter.....oops, did that sound antisocial.....as I understand, they will contact you first to say when they will be there, so that you can deal with computers, alarms, smoke detectors, etc.

They can't pull the meter while current is flowing. It could explode if they did, with sufficient current. If they really wanted to, they could cut the wires (still some danger of arc explosion) and then swap meters.

I was checking out a job yesterday and noticed a notice posted beside the meter, telling them not to install a smart meter. BC Hydro's turf, so it's hard to say what they will do after we upgrade the service.

I work in this industry (not for BC Hydro) and I have to respectfully disagree, infact when the came here to install a meter they just yanked the old meter live. It's common practice and they do wear safety gear.

Ya,I saw them do one on TV, it was a two minute job. I'm sure that one way or another we're going to pay dearly for them, just another legal way to be ripped off.

I know that this is a bit obscure but .....

When I was a kid, (about 45 years ago - good grief), I remember seeing a documentary on TV (I think it was on TV - but it may have been a teaser at a Drive in or something like that) about two guys who rode their Honda motorcycles (Honda 90's or something like that) on a wilderness adventure through the mountains in the US.  Seem to me that they were riding along the pacific crest trail but was probably just somewhere in norther California.  It was a 'Disney'esq' kind of documentary (for those of you that remember those) but I don't think it was a Disney doc.

That documentary kind of sparked my interest in motorcycles.  Any of you folks with really long memories have any suggestions on what the documentary may have been called?

Was it called..."The Motorcycle Diaries" ?  A story of two Latin Americans who go on an adventure by bike, and end up revolutionaries later in the life...a true story...I have the dvd...

Square four cranks but single set of pistons makes for a very nice engine, ask any SQ4 owner and the word is ultra-smooth. Typical German engineering, why make something with 4 moving parts when we can make do with 50. Gotta love the elegance of such thinking.

If you stick to logging roads you will be fine but what fun is that! We stay in the trees mainly with the Timbersleds so there is less avalanche hazard but we do wear the gear and take it very seriously.

Simple usable 40hp bikes, sane abandoned backroad swings & bends, beautiful vistas to contemplate, good company to share it with and a fine meal at the end of the day. Perfect, if only we were all 25 years old again. No....scratch that last part, the best years are right now....enjoy them!

It's about racing vintage bikes but what makes it special is the riders, they are just like you and me... average guys having fun on their old bikes. They may look slow but you can be sure that everyone of them is braking as late and accelerating out of the corners as hard  as they possibly can and unlike GP riders, I'll bet they all drove home Sunday night with big grins and happy memories of the days racing.  :) :)
